this has been going on for awhile, and i don't know what causes it. the display on my 933 ibook g4 always flickers at times, especially after adjusting the screen. my usual fix is to pull it closed some and then let it snap back up (the clutches have just enough give for it to bounce a few degrees). just now i did it, and the backlight cut out like it has before on me. i closed the display as usual and opened it to get the light on, but i found the machine has to go to sleep and wake up for the backlight to begin working again. it doesn't sound like the cable is the problem with it having to go to sleep, but then what could it be?

to my last ibook before apple replaced it. They said it is the backlight invertor iirc
My latest complaint (and only on this ibook) is that my CD-Rom drive will try to eject when there is no disc. It's not really killing it and doesn't affect operation, but it can be annoying.
It doesn't eject when there is a disc in there though, unless i want it to. I can live with it. that, and my ibook is now out of warranty...
That's the classical symptoms of a bad reed switch/inverter cable. Easy fix, cheap part (<$10). See it ALL the time.
I used to have similar problems on my 600MHz iBook. It hasn't shown up since I moved up to 10.4, but was fairly common under 10.2. Sometimes I'd have to close the drive 5-6 times before it stayed shut.
the screen just began flashing on me now without adjusting it again. i don't think i'd bother fixing this computer. it has major cosmetic damage from exposure to a solvent, and the battery is beyond dead. sad thing is it's only two years old. this thing is probably worth more for parts than as a computer in my opinon. i have a g4 albook on the way, though, and it'll be getting some nice drive upgrades when i open it to replace the warped bottom case.
