Apple IIe Numeric Keypad

I am thinkin about getting one of the external numeric keypads for my Apple //e, but am unsure where to connect it. They look to have a DB9 type connector. I don't know of that type of connector on the motherboard, so do you have to have a special card to plug it in to?

IIRC, it is a single row of pins near main keyboard connector. Mine was dark red plastic, holding the pins.

It looks like it is right next to the main keyboard connector.

That is what I was thinking. I found the pinouts, the keypad has a DB15 connector. Does anybody know if anyone sells these cables, or has one to sell?

Hello k4lmp,

Here are some interesting informations if you want to build the cable :

Apple //e Numeric Keypad cable

(This is from a Csa2 post by Mark Wade.)

To construct a suitable internal cable for a IIe numeric
keypad you need a female Dsub-15 to 11 pin female header.
If the female Dsub-15 is numbered like this:

           Dsub-15 (female)
    ,-------------------------.
    \ 08 07 06 05 04 03 02 01 /
     \ 15 14 13 12 11 10 09  /
      `---------------------'

And the 11 pin header is numbered like this:

|  11  10  9  8  7  6  5  4  3  2  1  |
|_____________________________________|

Then:

Dsub-15 | Header
________|_______
   12   |   11
   11   |   10
   10   |   9
    9   |   8
   NC   |   7
    7   |   6
    6   |   5
    5   |   4
    3   |   3
    2   |   2
    1   |   1

The header is as viewed on the motherboard. The Dsub-15 is the
female connector that you would plug the keypad into.

Well, I didn't get the numeric keypad. It was on ebay, and I got outbid. It went for $100. As it turns out, this was a good thing. I got a cherry Apple //e Platinum for $25 more. It has little to no yellowing, and came with two 5.25" drives and a joystick. All of the items are like new, with the exception of one of the drives, which has a little glue on one side where the case was cracked. I am so glad I lost the keypad bid, as now it isn't needed. Turned out great anyway.

That appears to be the older keypad for the II/II Plus.

Thanks for the link. I saw that one, which looks nice. I ended up just getting an Apple //e Platinum with the built in keypad. Thanks for the info, though, I appreciate it.

I know this is a very old thread, so my apologies if it is frowned upon to 'bump' it, but I just want to say this post helped me make a cable for a IIe number pad in a matter of minutes. Thanks for taking the time to format the information so clearly.
