Question about the DOS 3.3 Sample Programs disk BRICKOUT game

When I run the above game, my Joystick //e moves the 'bat' up and down only when I move the joystick left and right. When I move the joystick up and down, as would be intuitive, nothing happens.

Is this the same for you, or is there something wrong with my joystick?

Re: Question about the DOS 3.3 Sample Programs disk BRICKOUT ...

I thought Brickout was designed to work with the game paddles (it came out before there was a IIe, let alone a IIe joystick Smile
so it likely has something to do with the x y coordinates of a joystick vs. paddles.

Or, I have no clue what I'm talking about!!! (very likely)

I actually think you're right! Thank you! I just noticed that if I press one button rather than the other, or move the stick one way during the menu, it tells me I'm using the wrong paddle!

I used my version of 3.3 and it seems that everything is fine, UP and DOWN is correct in orientation. I think mine is the LAST version of 3.3 there are several versions and that makes things confusing. Perhaps you have an earlier version.

If the orientation LEFT/RIGHT is wrong, just turn the joystick 90 degrees? Work unless you have a weird non square one... I think anyway.

Thanks. Damn I wish I'd thought of that! I'd been playing it with the monitor rotated 90 degrees.

If you are serious... I think you need some new games.... the pong type games have been out of style now for 40 years... lol
