Another "FrankenApple II"?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/171635776779?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

The first thing I noticed was the keyboard and Motherboard Serial Number.

Steven :)

The Latest Apple ]['s did Overlap production with the Earliest Apple ][+'s.. But a Motherboard date of 8051, is Very Late indeed... I have read somewhere that the Apple ][ was produced through the end of 1979.

Also the First 16K has the Apple Logo on them, the Last 32K doesn't... Maybe a Warranty Motherboard Swap, under Warranty, with an Original Apple ][ built in DEC-1979, and repaired One Year later???

MarkO

The 78 thousand range apple IIs were just in that long tail end of the distribution. Apple kept the regular II in their product line at least into 1981. There was another apple II just like this last february, serial 78603 and motherboard 8106. The next serials I've bothered to write down are 67ks, with motherboards from very late 80 to 81. I haven't seen Apple II serials between 68k and 77k, though I suppose a few could possible be out there. These odd outliers pop up from time to time.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Hunting for 16k plugs on a board from 1980 ?.......

It is too new of a Board for the RAM Plugs...

and the so called "language card" in fact beeing a ROMcard with broken switch ( without red lever ) ?

I saw a post about those Switches on the ROM cards.. There still might be Stock Available.

poor guy who offers more than 50 bucks on that "sparepart case".....

For an Untested System... It might be worth $100.00... It might have good Integer and AppleSoft ROM's

All,

Something interesting:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/181638842842?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

But for the fact that there are two Transwarp IIe cards there I would not have taken a second look.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

You must be the other one watching that!! Saw that earlier and almost went right past it.

Still, a II+ with a couple transwarp and a bunch of Super Serial cards hardly looks worth 3k.

however, curious about the description. they say they did not test the disk drives but the machine boots into the software shot on the screen. Different CPU or some sort of firmware card installed?

Zan,

I didn't read anything about that.
I was looking through the description and pictures
when I noticed the two Transwarp's listed.

But you're right, the whole thing is not worth 3k.

Not the only point....
just take a closer view to the detail picture of the powerconnector corner....
the white sticker with "serial No.".....
Apple allways noted the year/week of production just straight with markerpen to the mainboard ( without sticker ) !
so whats the reason for "hidding" the true notation ?
nevertheless... the board at least has the RAM selection plugs.....
but there are several mismatches.....

I think it's just a blurry picture? It looks similar to my Apple II, it doesn't look like a sticker. The number isn't hidden, just difficult to read, it's even listed in the auction 7916

It must have been really hard to read, as the previous time he listed it was listed as 7913, good thing he fixed it, that extra 3 weeks makes it worth several hundred more I guess...

georgel,

Yeah.

I sent a message to Mace about the fact that the "Description" left a lot to be desired.
He told me that Ebay had shut his last two auctions for this item down.

Now, I do not understand that, but at the time, the auction price
for this unit was higher than it is now.

Hmmmm. (he thought)

Anyone know of a Joe Kramer who sells vintage Apple on eBay?

He has been pulling down stolen machines and selling as parts. He has an accomplice. Their trading days will soon be over.

Lots of stuff in there, even the dust covers Smile Now for the low-low price of $1650 'murican. Actually, if they keep lowering the price at that rate they may get into reasonable teritory soon.

I have to admit I do enjoy vintage software in-box.

Ok. NAME AND SHAME eBay sellers.

Chris BALOR (chrisor333) sold me a very very early ][ Plus. I had bought some nice pieces he claimed to have sourced from Silicon Valley previously. I never received the last shipment and he disappeared off the face of the earth.

Some months later, Joe KRAMER (joekramer1966) pulled down the very same machine and sold it piece by piece for much more on eBay. I know this because of the exact same serial numbers plus the machine had some rare RGB components as well. This plus some 3rd party floppy drives came from Chris' possession after I paid his PayPal invoice.

Both are in CA.

PayPal have them flagged and my bank's fraud department is also looking into it.

This stuff reminds me to behavior often seen in facebook and other "new media":
publishing bad issues without proof - seems to be new kind of bashing or mobbing.....
i was hoping that this platform would keep clean from that kind of stuff....
seemms that we now are facing changes in behavior resulting from bad behavior in other social media...
is this the new modern world ?
then i´ll prefer to stay with the old faschioned way....
no statements without evidence....

He is right MyPal.

We make fun sometimes of the items being sold by unknowing individuals
and on occasion we have actually even found a few fraudulent Sellers,
but each time that has occurred there was actual evidence.

Just because both of these folks live in California, does not mean
that they are in cahoots with each other.

That being said; there was an incident a couple years back
That reminds me of what you are talking about, but the fellow
in question was working out of the North West. If I remember
correctly it was either Northern California, or Oregon.
I do not remember the specifics.

I would even go a step ahead in my statement above....:
if sure evidence ( like the mentioned serial numbers ) would have been passed over as evidence
with the related offers to the security branch of ebay - that accounts would have been shut down by ebay...
i even would have recommended to just exactly do that - because trade of goods resulting from theft or burglary
forces ebay to protect other members from purchase....
but ebay did not shut down that accounts...
this indicates - at least to me - that there was not enough valid evidence passed over to ebay...
so - at least i - make up my mind about that....

@ steven,
i agree completely with your explenations

Re: THIS is Laughable!

So guys, why question the integrity of the post? If you're sticking up for them, you all probably know them too! I have evidence. So take notice. I would not waste my time bullshitting around if it didn't justify a heads up, even if it is only a few hundred dollars.

The last purchase made from Chris was via PayPal invoice and payment, not eBay. As such, eBay have no jurisdiction over the matter.

It is people like this that tarnish the market for this stuff. Collectors lose interest, and demand drops.

As for posting evidence, the authorities have it. Publishing such evidence is a privacy concern, I don't need to do that. But if you are curious enough to shoot the time and correlate the sellers past listings, here is a description of the goods. You will find the sold item numbers. 331401227258 should get you started.

The Apple ][ Plus was in original box and matching serials 03162. Machine was working and in great shape. Box in good condition had some color fading and stains but good structure. Also had a pair of RANA disk drives in original boxes with manuals and interface card. Earlier ][ keyboard with raised light. Had ram card, dumpling64 card and a rare rgb card that had an unusual rgb pin configuration. I did not buy the RANA drives but Joe Kramer ended up with these too and sold them. The Apple ][ Plus was deconstructed into parts, sold motherboard, keyboard, language card, RGB card, case & box, RANA floppies all as separate listings.

If Chris Balor (aka Browning) and Joe Kramer have an issue about posting my accusation here, they can contact me and PayPal about it!!!! But they won't, because they are already running from this and who knows what else. Last I know, Chris had moved and Joe was using his glass table to re-photograph the items, so it would seem they do know each other.

My beef is "Goods not received", but I am pissed at the blatant fraud that has transpired. BTW, the fraudulent claim was resolved in my favour. payPal and eBay have been cooperative. However they decide to handle the criminal side of things is up to them.

This is a good thing.

This should happen to all the fraudulent Sellers on eBay.

Now that we've beat this horse for a while
why don't we all chill and have some fun?

That's what we're here for, right?

Re: THIS is Laughable!

One more go at it, because it lives again!

The Apple ][ Plus case serial no: 03162 is up for sale again. This time by a Danish (Denmark) seller. It appears the base has been put onto a different top. Where is it's matching serial numbered packing box also?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-II-Plus-Apple-II-very-low-serial-A2S2-03162-empty-body-shell-case-/191490262493?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1979-APPLE-II-Plus-body-shell-with-Matching-Box-great-project-Low-serial-/331401227258?pt=US_Vintage_Computers_Mainframes&hash=item4d290d6bfa&nma=true&si=Np%252FX%252B%252FQz4HVQ7bE07x3Y4UJ6BKY%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Undoubtedly s/n 03162 has been compromised since its recent deconstruction to parts. Technically, stolen goods. A number to keep away from.

Back at the plot...

Here's a IIe, untested, with six-digit serial number for $750. No accessories. Seller's description includes the phrase, "No visible missing pieces."

I my experience "untested" is eBay speak for "not working".

I've heard other people (typically rival sellers) say that too. My experience has been that "untested" means they simply don't know how and/or can't be bothered to try. Which is unfortunate - they could get more for it if they did. But if you're an estate sale-r, liquidator, etc., you typically are just trying to flip merchandise as quickly as you can.

Definitely. I often look at the seller. When I see them selling multiple items, and sometimes I see things listed as tested and working, but another item is untested (when the machine they are selling at the same time could be used to test the other item) I get suspicious.

Generally though in my experience they are often as you mentioned, estate sales or other liquidators that have high volume and simply move items out the door.

As long as something is clearly marked "as is" or "untested" then the onus is on me, not the seller.

As for the $750 IIe, well it DOES have a genuine Apple Parallel card WITH cable, so perhaps the $750 price tag is justified!! Wink

(a nod's as good as a wink to a blind man....... he said knowingly... know what I mean? Know what I mean? Say no more, say no more!)

Re: THIS is Laughable!

@Jay and Steven,

Between 1962 and 1964 Ferrari built 33 250 GTOs for sports car homologation. They sold for $18,000 a piece. A friend of my dad's picked up one in 1967 for $6,000 and sold it 2 years later for about the same amount. Last year Bonham's auctioned one off for $38Million!

Most items that have the potential to be considered classics have that characteristic curve, where the used price reaches a minimum and then beings to rise to unlimited heights. Not sure if the Apple IIe will ever match the Ferrari (LOL), but it does have the potential to be a classic of sorts and it looks like it has begun it's value upswing. Crazy as it may seem, this is the way of things.

Another example we are familiar with is the Apple I. Began life at $600, became useless junk that most people scrapped, and is now "worth" $1M.

Another missed dream is one of mine. 9 years ago the local high school had an auction of old equipment before moving into a new building. In the auction were 60 Apple II systems (not + or e), each with a disk drive and monitor. There was no minimum on any item and no one bid on the Apples! I could have had them all for $10! Potentially worth $120,000 right now! Instead they went to the dump.

Sad

What's worse is, I was there. I did pick up a great microscope for my daughter. Looked at the Apple II's, but did not bid on them. The building itself sold a bit less than 2 years ago and the real estate agent that sold it is a friend of mine. When I asked about the Apple's he said they were hauled off the the electronics recycler at our local dump. It was a condition of the sale that the "junk" be cleared out. I went over to the recycler to ask about them and they told me that they had all been dismantled and sent to various places for bulk recyling. When I showed them what they were worth on eBay the guy almost feinted. He estimated they had got about $200 for all the materials.

What a waste!

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Last 3 postings just do not mention about one important fact:

AVAILIABILITY

The amount of Apple I availiable to the market is really very limited ( 30 to 50 pcs. ).
The amount of Apple II ( not + ! ) availiable to the market is really rather limited ( several 100´s ).
The amount of Apple II+ availiable to the market is really not very limited ( several 1000´s ).
The amount of Apple IIe availiable to the market is really quite unlimited ( several 10.000´s ).

1.Price is always also dependent to availiable sources ( amount of pieces ) .....
2.Of course also market has often been making loopback jumps in the last years caused by "bubbles"....
( caused by numerous guys running hopefully for buckets of gold and afterwards
losing bunches of money when bubbles blasted away )- then market turned back to 1. .....

Not sure why availability would need to have be mentioned as I was not discussing a current pricing.

I was only mentioning 1) that some items get more "valuable" over time including Apple IIe, and 2) I missed the opportunity to buy 60 Apple IIs for next to nothing. So there was no need to mention availability.

I think we are all aware of the effect of availability on price and the effect of time on availability.

Anyone in the market for an eMac that HAS A YELLOWING TO THE PLASTIC FRAME AROUND THE SCREEN WHICH GIVES A NICE VINTAGE LOOK TO THE COMPUTER ?

Zan

PS - You still have a chance to get that "This is Laughable!" thread favorite ORIGINAL VINTAGE MACINTOSH IIci if you are still looking!

But since Apple IIs are the true topic of this particular forum (I am not posting in the 680x0 forum after all) at least we can play some games if we want. If you need to replace a few AppleWorks Disks you can do that too!
I was going to read Basic for the Apple II Programming and Applications but perhaps I'll just buy it for 11 bucks on amazon instead! (or 2 bucks for the paperback!!)

Well, to check out Georgel's statement, that these $6 items were funtionally the same as the one that went for $57, I decided to drop a whopping $12 and pick up a couple for my Apple IIe's.

Got them a few days ago and just installed them now. Georgel was right. They work perfectly!

Thanks for the tip Geogel.

I feel sorry for the poor sap that spent $57 on one.

@speedyG:
Yep, I agree. But the number of available Apple-1's seems to me a bit high ...

Do you have estimates on other Apple machines, especially the ///, /// plus and // c plus?
(I guess that the standard //c falls in the //e category)

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Hello theart02,
i have never made a table....
in actual guesses i allways perform a brief calc my mind ( i´ve also studied quite a while ago math sience )
there are several factors to be valued in such a calc:

for example the ii+ and IIe models have also been distributed by a apple program to equip schools with computers
over quite a period.... similar was also performed with the IIGS models....
the III models haven´t participated in that kind of distribution... schools kept these computers even quite a while after the regular sales on that models have quit....

similar is also valid to the IIc models - in general they haven´t been granted to the school programs....

another fact in the calc is the amount of time that production line was running and number of production lines
as well as amount of sold computers ( resulting from old statistics in computer mags and old newspapers with
data from sales reports to economic newspapers ) some factors depend also to local specifics ( like in Europe
with other laws how to handle recycling )

in the last 20 years in Europe more old computers have been destroyed in the junkyards than in the U.S.
thats also the reason that the prices in the USA for old Apple II models are rather less high than in Europe where prices are slightly more high - but even then quite moderate compared to prices in Australia, where the computers are
sold with rather high prices ( also by influence of availiability to obsolete spareparts for repairing such computers and keeping them running - a problem also common in Europe resulting from the recycling laws )

compared to the laws in US where fans of old computers get rather more easy spareparts from junkyards and recycling companies that serve market by sales at ebay too.... so anyhow true amounts of availiable computers can allways only be a guess....

turning back to the Apple 1: at least 30 computers are known and registrated in the list from Mike Willegal....
so it´s not to unexpected to make guess that at least similar amount of computers have survived in clossets and cellars without getting registrated at Mike Willegals list - and that might turn back to daylight, when the owners pass away within next years and the wives or children take a chance to make some "big bucks" on their own behalf within the next 15 to 20 years....

of course also quite a large amout of that computers are not usable today due to electrical or mechanical damages that first must be serviced by experts like corey986...

if you want to estimate the amount of availiable Apple /// or ///+ you have to bear in mind that Steven Jobs screwed down the production the very moment he realized the /// models to turn out becoming a flop and Woz being mobbed out of the company....

of course there still are a bunch more of /// models availiable than from the Apple Lisa allthough the LISA was still running from production line, when the /// model has been "burried" from sales .... but the LISA was not built in that amounts like the /// models, because the Lisa was targeting to a higher pricesegment at the customers....

FYI, my middle school had plain ole Apple IIs. I used to go in early to the math lab and play Star Wars and Star Trek. This was the Fall of 1978. I don't know if they were procured through an Apple company school program or some kind of other method... we also had CompuColor computers!

Unfortunately most wives will not know what they have. Mine wouldn't, neither would my mom. Most of the undiscovered ones will just end up in the trash.

I know it's not an Apple I, but I had an antique Mollenhauer bass recorder (mfd. 1880 in Germany) made of apple wood that I had loaned to my father. While I was out of the country for a couple of years for work my parents moved. My mom "cleaned house" before the move. She found the bass recorder and thought it was a piece of junk my dad had picked up somewhere, so it went into the bin. That was 20 years ago and that instrument was worth over $5000 then. Lord knows how much it would be worth today.

It's so sad when this sort of thing happens, but it does.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

BillO,

Reminds me of what happened when I was 11 (1964).
We were living in Germany where my Pop was stationed.
We got an allowance of $5.00 a month (a lot money for a kid then).
We made one trip per month to the air base in Wiesbaden.
Believe it or not, most comics were 12 cents.
I picked up the Fantastic Four with the very first appearance of the Silver Surfer.
I tried to keep it in pristine condition.

When Pop got orders and we came back to the States, my mom said
"I will not carry paper back across the ocean. It weighs too much."
"Give all your comics away to someone here."

Today that particular Fantastic Four in pristine condition can fetch up to $1,000.00. Sad

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Wow, a 833,333% increase in value!

There are just too many stories like this. I am sure we all have them.

You're 7 years older than me Steven. From '63 to '69 we were in Ghana, west Africa. Our rich relatives from the US and my grand mother in Ireland used to send us comics every month. I can't remember all of them. Nor what had happened to them, but I did have the original introduction of Iron Man which was not in it's own comic then, but some generic series that had lots of different stories and characters in it. He appeared a number of times in that series as did Captain America. It was in those, once in a while Iron Man episodes, he went from his original clunky gun-metal grey Armour to the sleek red and gold he now wears. The Invincible Iron Man series did not come come out until the very late '60's as I recall, as it was not long after that we moved to Canada in the spring of '69. I had a handful of those too, including #1. I totally lost interest in comics after coming to Canada and I have no idea what happened to all those comic books I had collected while in Africa nor what their value would be today. I don't want to know.

It happens every day. We dispose of stuff that at the time has little or no value to us, only to see it become a treasure a few years down the road.

Long live the Apple II series!!!!

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Yes I just received a complaint from the buyer of the case. I was completely unaware of it being stolen goods. I needed the box and top for a project and bought it for that purpose. As I had no use for the case I sold it on ebay.
Where did I buy it from? Here:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1979-APPLE-II-Plus-body-shell-with-Matching-Box-great-project-Low-serial-/331401227258?ssPageName=ADME:L:CORT:US:3160

Needless to say that it is not a great way to start the weekend; being accused of selling stolen goods so I would very much like to see said evidence.

Quickly loosing confidence in Ebay...

One more go at it, because it lives again!

The Apple ][ Plus case serial no: 03162 is up for sale again. This time by a Danish (Denmark) seller. It appears the base has been put onto a different top. Where is it's matching serial numbered packing box also?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-II-Plus-Apple-II-very-low-serial-A2S2-03162-empty-body-shell-case-/191490262493?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1979-APPLE-II-Plus-body-shell-with-Matching-Box-great-project-Low-serial-/331401227258?pt=US_Vintage_Computers_Mainframes&hash=item4d290d6bfa&nma=true&si=Np%252FX%252B%252FQz4HVQ7bE07x3Y4UJ6BKY%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Undoubtedly s/n 03162 has been compromised since its recent deconstruction to parts. Technically, stolen goods. A number to keep away from.

LSM and all,

You have to remember one thing...
eBay is a microcosm (Wow! a twenty-five cent word!) of the world.
There are all kinds of folks selling there.
Pirates, Paupers, Sinners, and Saints, with a sprinkling of others.

To paraphrase Forrest Gump:

"Ebay is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get."
