MarkO and all,

I wrote this seller an email and asked him why he thought the Mac IIci was worth $12k?
He said because he was the original owner.

Yup. That's a really good reason...NOT!

Well, DUH! Naturally, if he's the original owner then there you have it. 'Nuff Said. True Dat.

Single owner vehicle, single owner Mac IIci. Yep, perfectly logical.

Ummm...... OK

Re: THIS is Laughable!

In my quest to get my recently acquired eMate up and running, I spent a lot of time on eBay looking for parts. One seller, apparently a computer store, had an "Apple Newton eMate Laptop For Parts" with the "hard drive and RAM removed".
Hard drive? RAM?
Well, what someone thought was RAM; while it clearly didn't have a hard drive for removal, the ROM card had indeed been pilfered.
Thing is, the price was like outlandish.
I can't seem to find the auction now...

Tell the seller that he must sell it to you for $12.00 because you are the "original buyer".

Sent a note asking where the hard drive is, waiting for a response. (not that the price would be justified even if a working Vulcan was inside but thought I'd ask anyway!!)

A surprising number of people don't seem to understand that "mint condition" means "indistinguishable from new". If it's got visible yellowing, it ain't mint.

When ever I see an auction... say an Apple IIe or GS for $1200 bucks, is the person is just trying to get back they money they spent when it was new... heck, if I bought a GS in say 1989 and then realized it only had 2mhz of power, i'd try for 20 years to get my money back too...

2.0, 2.8... I mean the Apple IIc Plus had 4mhz, and its only 8bits... I am not sure what Apple was thinking with that one. The GS I admit looks cool, but its like a Fiero, has the looks (at least some of them) but not much under the hood. The v6 still outran the corvettes of the time though, not too shabby. Tells you how bad GM was in the 80's. Heck, the 'couple of hundred dollar' Lazer systems ran circles around original hardware at a fraction of the price.

While I have you here I have a question...

I have a Laser128 EX.
I also have the Expansion Box for said Laser.

In your opinion, what should I ask for the Expansion Box?

Here's a good one. The description says "Great cosmetic condition" with a broken enter key. If this is "great", I would hate to see "fair". Well, at least it works and has a "ComputerCraft" sticker on it.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Oh, to be honest I have no idea. I am assuming (although possibly incorrectly) that any accessory of the sort would have been over manufactured in comparison to the computer, and liquidated in numbers at the end of its run. A Laser (Apple IIC clone) doesn't go for much more than the actual Apple IIC these days, which means the real hardware has DEFLATED a lot... the computer is about 100 bucks unless you have the box/accessories. If the Expansion is empty.... i'd honestly say 50 bucks if you could get it would be great... haven't owned or sold one. Don't get me wrong, its one of the coolest things about a LAZER, the 2nd Is the extra Speed!

Hey Steve

I am fine. Had a bleeding ulcer and had to recover from that. Not fun but am doing okay now. Just looking at eBay and craigslist and it's been real quiet lately.

I don't know what it is with all these people trying to get top dollar for all this broken gear either.

Thx

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Well Jay,
3 reasons:
1st : missing knowledge of real marketprice and googeling unsold item from ebay....
2nd : bunches of bad description at ebay that become "standard" not because of correctness,
but only by statistical amount of published wrong descriptions at ebay
3rd : greed, greed and once more greed.... ( including a bunch of ignorance )

"nothing to worry about".....

not very long time ago there was a country where everybody started to swallow pills and
the people became insane step by step..... the king refused to swallow the pills and
watched the people getting insane..... after a while the whole country changed and the people
started believing the king to be insane, because he refused swallowing the pills and therefor did not behave
like the majority of the people....
after he stopped resistance and started swallowing the pills - the people cheered the king to become normal.....

sigh... the definition about what is normal is not dependent to behaviour - only about
amount in percentage of people performing a "normal" habit....

or like zarathustra stated: statements about truth are dependent from point of view....
LOL

Speedy, Jay, and All,

lol

Yes. "Perspective" can be a bitch! lol

But from my perspective a whole lot of these sellers
wouldn't know an Apple II from their elbow. Let alone
know anything about retro-computing, period.

They don't even look through the existing or completed auctions
to see what items are going for.
As the years go by, it just seems to be getting worse.

Now for a laugh...

Maceffects ( an all around good guy who I have purchased from before)
Placed an Original ImageWriter up for auction for $450.00.

This ImageWriter was In the box, Never opened, with all the original wrapping
and accessories
.

Now, being reasonable about these things, I can see where this item could be $450.00
especially an unopened one.

The Kicker... He opened the sealed box to take pictures for the auction!

When I asked him why...he said:
"I did not want to be accused of selling something that was not actually in the box."

A different perspective, perhaps?

nope....
with that story we are back to the question:
what was first ? duck or egg ?
LOL

the problem how to sell at ebay a item at "high price level" without showing it.....
next question does a functiontest reallly kill the description NIB
some lawyers have written books on that question in relation to the sale of a "brand new car from factory"
..... and the price is dropping down.... and down.... and down.....
LOL

Hello transwarp II guy,

it seems the guy has pulled the handbrake and altered the offer to regular bidding
- still with buy now option but at least also for normal bids too
( allthough there still is a "hidden reserve not reached barrier"......
but it has started now with the first offer at 9 cent.......

but of course it´s still a "surprize egg" - no real boot screen...... no pictures of inside of case....
and "showroom 1983" is like a chewing gum ....... maybe "backyard showroom of our little farm"
not to forget transportation by UPS ( most valuable transportation for items heading for christies ?).....
that might result to sale at 40 bucks and transportation of 200 bucks....

so we first can recognize what kind of reserve has been set on Monday 23rd indicating sale or not and at what price....

Just makes you wonder whether the Apple II gear would have so ludicrous price requests on eBay, if Steve Jobs had not returned to Apple in 1997?

the turnback of Jobs wasn´t the point for jumping prices..... maybe the hype would have driven Apple less and Apple would have lost some of the marketing gags... but:

the first insane large leap was after his death, when thousands of guys with no real knowledge about the company history
started to believe it´s mining gold if they find anything in their storage with the magic word "Apple" on the case.....
the first big disappointment to these guys occured when they have been forced to realize that the other cofounder
Woz is still alive..... most of that guys didn´t even know about him... remember all that "Steve Jobs" flagging and
spamming at ebay ? And it still is ongoing..... most of such Apple IIe´s like the one listed above with the damaged
keypad would have been dumped to the junkyard 3 years ago and then offered by tha salvage owner for a few bucks....
In the last 3 years everybody owning a piece of plastic with the printing Apple at it, now believes he´s got a jackpot
in the attic......
i stated 3 years ago, that this is going nuts and being infected by rules of the art-community....
"yeah - oh my god the artist is dead ! the picture will increase within 1 year by at least 1000% !"

The economy is going nuts and struggling from one bubble to the next bubble the past 10 years.....
Even after Lehmann bros. - Goldman Sachs believes to be able running that kind of business for another
couple of decades by inventing new bubbles.... and millions of lemmings trusting in such fairytales
keep jumping over the cliff by advice of their traders.
Untill they discover to have millions of toxic papers in their portfolio - nothing of real value -
just bunches of lottery bets....... the only remaining question is:
"which day will be the the true revival of the black friday" ..... when the plane with the entire topmanagers
from Goldman Sachs crashes ? Or when that entire crew is sentenced for 999 years to jail ?

sigh

Sometimes when I watch an item, and it expires, and gets relisted, it does indeed go up.

It seems that these sellers are trying to create a sense of urgency and are trying to persuade the "watcher" to snatch it up now by creating the fear of an ever rising price.

OR, they are trying to create the illusion of a luxury item.

Keatah, Speedy, and All,

Valid points all!

The seller with the $12,000.00 Mac IIci.
The sellers with $400.00 to $600.00 IIe's.
The sellers with $300.00 to $500.00 IIc's.

And more than 70 percent do not go through the listings to find the going rates for things
before they place an outrageous price on their items.
Just about that many do not know what they are selling. They don't care.

All of that and more can be found right here.
That's why I started this thread. lol

Well the interesting thing is the Duodrive.....
Was there evey a chance to use that station at a Mac ?
Up to my knowledge NO !
seems the Apple II went off earlier - and he now believes this remaining part to belong to the Mac.....?
That far about the knowledge of the guy to the system..... probably a rest of the heritage from Grandpa ?

Good call on not trusting the letter of authenticity. "Rare and Signed" is one of the COA companies that eBay specifically disallows:

Apparently it sold today for a best offer price.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Here is something interesting...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Apple-II-computer-low-serial-number-not-IIe-or-II-plus-/151634196717?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item234e1a38ed

But, I am wondering if there is something wrong and if the Serial Number 2455 has been seen before on eBay?

This auction makes the hair on the back of my head stand up. lol

Re: THIS is Laughable!

You know, I actually feel sorry for these type of guys.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Macintosh-LC-rare-vintage-working-condition-/321713215265?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ae79a1721

They have no experience with selling vintage hardware and see others putting hardware up there with outlandish prices and think they can get the same for theirs.

Or maybe I am wrong about this seller, but it seems his other stuff is reasonably priced.

$1000 for an LC? Not likely.
