I saw a compatibility chart on the Apple website http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1835 that says that the Powerbook 5300 can support OS 9.1. I have several PowerBook 5300s and a 190cs and was wondering if anyone has tried this yet? I figure it might be a good way to squeeze a few more bits of life out of these old collection pieces of mine considering they have PCI ports (if I am remembering correctly, I would have to look). Can anyone verify that this works? Thanks!

Yes. My PB5300ce ran Mac OS 9.1 briefly. Even with a 32MB expansion RAM card installed (40MB total RAM), it was slow as molasses with 9.1 on it.
I wound up backing off to 8.6, and use it for poking around in that OS.
I might give it a try, just installed OS 9 from the CD I have onto one of my iBook Clamshells, just for kicks and I love using Classilla browser.
I've been running OS 9.1 on my PB5300cs for almost two years.
It's slow, but it's managable.
The OS 9 install disc told me I needed 32MB or more of RAM... Can't remember the last time I read that! I wonder how much is in there... Its running OS 7.5.3 so I will poke around a bit and try to find out.
My Bad....
I forgot to say that I was running more than 32 Meg of RAM on this beastie. I started with OS 7.5 (?), then took it up to 8, then 9.1. I had to play with it during the process. lol
