I deleted about a thousand spam accounts this morning and have temporarily locked registrations. If you're a real person who created an account in the past 16 hours, I apologize. Please email me (tom at this domain) and I'll manually recreate your account. And if you're new and would like an account, please email me as well.

How do you kill that which has no life? :)
Was it a server side script injection that was causing the problems? You don't need to answer if you don't want to. I'm just curious as usual.
Great job getting things patched up in a timely fashion!

I get the impression it was just a scripted version of what we've seen before. Spamming account creation and then they post messages with advertising and/or links to malware.
In the past it has been smaller numbers of fake accounts made, this time apparently large numbers.
We were using a static riddle as captcha, so once they solved that, they could script the creation of accounts. It's not the best captcha, obviously, but it kept everything local, and it worked fine for 10 years.
One member messaged, asking (preemptivley) that I not consider cloudflare as an anti-spam measure. For anybody else who's concerned: we will go to packet radio over HF before we go to cloudflare.
Maybe this is an alternative to consider:
