Using TransWarp with RamWorks III

I recently bought a TransWarp card for my Apple //e Platinum. I have a RamWorks III card installed in the Aux slot. The recommended slot for the TransWarp is slot 3. Can I use the TransWarp in slot 3, and still have the Ramworks III card in the Aux? I have searched, and found nothing. From what I have read, if you have a card in the Aux slot, then, slot 3 should be empty. Thanks.

Re: Using TransWarp with RamWorks III

up to my knowledge the recommendation for using the Transwarp in slot 3 is because of speed issues....
the next fastest slot would be slot 4. As far as i know the RAMworks will fail if other card is used in slot 3.
The best solution would be to keep RAMworks in AUXslot - keep slot 3 empty - and move TRANSwarp to slot 4.
that should work perfect.

Re: Using TransWarp with RamWorks III

OK, my problem is the thing is almost full. Here is what I have:

Slot 1: empty
Slot 2: super serial card
Slot 3/Aux: ramworks III w/1 meg
Slot 4: mouse card
Slot 5: apple 1 meg ram expansion
Slot 6: cffa 3000
Slot 7: duodisk controller

Could I move the mouse card to slot 1?

Thanks Speedy

Yes.

This is because on the standard IIe, the presence of an 80-Columns card in Aux slot would activate the built-in 80-cols firmware mapped to slot 3. Thus any card with a ROM in slot 3 would not be able to access that ROM.

The enhanced IIe has a system of ID bytes that allows cards in slot 3 with a ROM to work if certain ID bytes are present in that card's ROM.

Since the Transwarp IIe takes over the entire Apple system, the slot 3 ROM issue doesn't matter, so the custom is to put it in slot 3.

The overall answer to your question is yes. It will all work with the RamWorks in the Aux slot and the Transwarp in slot 3. I have this same setup myself.

That is great. This was confusing to me, as the only thing I could find was the no answer, but, when I read the TransWarp manual, and the review, there was a hint that it might work. Thanks all for the fast replies. Now, I have to wait on the card to get here. I really would have liked to got the Microsoft Soft Card the guy had, as well, but the funds just weren't there. Thanks again to all.

So, I know I probably need to set the dip switches, so that my super serial remains at 1mhz, as well as my disk controller card. How about the CFFA3000? Can that slot run at the 3.x mhz, or since it emulates drives, should I set it for 1 mhz as well? Thanks.

I have 2 IIe computers with RAMWORKS III cards in the Aux Slot and TRANSWARP Cards in Slot 1. This works perfectly and you don't have to worry about Slot 3 at all. Smile

Re: Using TransWarp with RamWorks III

IIRC, Cards that Have ROMs mapped into the Apple Memory Space Won't work in Slot #3 if there is an 80 Column card of any type in the AUX Slot..

I used an Echo ][ Speech Synthesizer in Slot #3 while using the Apple ][e 80 Column Card in the AUX Slot. I later updated that Original 80 Column Card to an AE RAM Works III, still no Issues... That was in 1984-86. I currently have an Enhanced //e with an Echo ][ Plus in Slot #3 and the Apple 64K 80 Column card in the AUX Slot...

The Echo ][ is a Port I/O device....

Regarding down-clocking certain slots to 1 MHz: I've only ever needed to do this for 5.25" controller cards. I've used a TimeMaster clock, Super Serial Card, Uthernet, and Focus Drive all at top Transwarp speed.

You're wasting Slot 1 in your IIe. Transwarp cards can go in slot 3 - they won't interfere with an aux RAM card.

The only cards you need to slow down for are (generally speaking):

Floppy controllers: (5.25, 3.5). Hard drive controllers are generally OK accelerated.

Co-processor cards i.e. FastMath, 6809 etc. Z-80 cards don't count, they take over the Apple II, so the Transwarp is deactivated.

Parallel and Serial cards: YMMV, but you're probably going to experience a buffer overrun at some point.

A few older clock cards won't work accelerated either.
