It's multi-coloured because t

It's multi-coloured because the logo was to promote the Apple II's colour capabilities.

Newton?

The original Apple logo was a fairly detailed drawing of Newton sitting under an Apple tree. The logo was designed to look like a scroll.

I don't recall exactly when Apple changed to the rainbow fruit logo, but I would venture to say that the Apple I used the Newton scroll logo.

Are we forgetting something?

Remember the Apple I was just an elaborate printed-circuit board, not a stylish computer system with prominent logos and the like.

And of course we all know the corny lines that could go with the "byte" out of the current logo...("More byte for your buck" etcetera)

Tom Hornby writes a little bit about the change in logo in that article.
