Apple II

Looking for Apple iI sn 12989

I am looking to re-acquire Apple II sn 12989. I originally bought this computer in 1982 or 1983 and it was my first Apple II computer. Back in 2014/2015 I sold this Apple II to a fellow Applefritter member as I had run out of home storage space. I also sold my Apple III computer at the same time. Since then, my wife has helped me organize my strorage space and now have the room in our house to store another few computers. I miss my old Apple II sn 12989 and would like to re-acquire it from its current owner.

cc65 optimization reg. cdecl

Hi!  Recently, I was optimizing my text adventure and noticed that, when I use the --all-cdecl switch on the cc65 or cl65 command line, I get slightly better results.  Just mentioning.

ProDOS disk-handling from MSDOS PC?

Hi!  I was looking at an Asimov mirror and found a2tools.zip.  It handles Apple2 DOS 3.3 disk images from MS-DOS.  Where can I find a utility that does the same for ProDOS disk images?  I want a command-line utility, but an UI would also be nice.

The ESP32 SoftCard for the Apple II

I’ve been working on a new card for the Apple II that would extend its capabilities using my favorite Wi-Fi module: the ESP32. I decided to called it a soft card, because similarly to the original Z80 SoftCard it contains its own processor allowing it to run software not originally meant for the Apple II. And similarly to the original 80-column card that was needed, it produces its own composite video enabled through a soft switch. Both NTSC and PAL are supported and can be switched using a command. In addition it can produce 8-bit sound that is mixed and played through the Apple II speaker. For most of its applications the card also needs a FAT32 formatted microSD card.

So far it has the following capabilities:

     - Connect to the Internet through Wi-Fi.

     - Listen to Internet radio or play MP3 files stored on the SD card or streamed from a URL. Playback can remain in the background while running Apple II programs.

     - Play videos stored on the SD card or streamed from a URL. The maximum resolution is 320x240.

     - Run Doom. Its shareware or full WAD files and MP3 music need to be placed in a folder of the SD card.

     - Run Wolfenstein 3D. A shareware or a full version of the game needs to be in a folder of the SD card.

     - Emulate a Macintosh classic. The ROM and floppy/hard drive images need to be on the SD card.

     - Emulate SEGA and NES. Game ROMs need to be on the SD card.

     - A rudimentary 80x25 text mode command console with DOS-like commands.

     - A rudimentary text based FTP client.

     - Support for an Apple II joystick. The joystick can be used in Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, SEGA, NES and the Macintosh emulator, where it can either be a regular joystick or emulate a mouse.

     - Support for grayscale mode for monochrome monitors.

     - In progress: support for the Apple Mouse II.

     - In progress: horizontal and vertical centering of the picture and overscan/underscan adjustments and persistence.

     - In progress: over-the-air firmware update capability.

This card does not have a boot capability and it uses a program that I wrote in Basic and compiled in Einstein, which locates the card and interfaces with it. So far it has been tested on Apple IIe, Apple II+ and Pravetz 82. It doesn’t require ProDOS and it can run on 48K.

Most of the work and challenges so far have been on the software side, so until now I have been developing it using a prototype board and kept the schematics in Paint. However inspired by the Dan ][ Controller’s retro look, I decided it's finally time to put everything in KiCad and do the PCB. I am planning to order the first 5 boards within the next day or two.

Need help locating a correct ImageWriter II magnet

Hello group,

Would someone be able to tell me where I can find a replacement magnet (that is known to work) that goes on the cover of the ImageWriter II. Mine was missing when I got the printer and I bought some small magnets from Amazon and they feel much stronger than an original and they didn’t work. The printer still thinks the cover is off.  If I put a cover with an original magnet on it on, the printer works fine. And help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Apple IIe Keyboard (ROM?) woes...

Hello everyone--  FWIW, I am new here.  I am just now getting on the bandwagon with restoring an Apple IIe.

Laser 128 ROM Dump ROM VER 3.5

I recently obtained a Laser 128 system. When testing it I tried to see if a FloppyEMU would work in any 3.5 modes, but had no luck. I tried ROM versions 4.2 and 4.5 before finding out they were for a slightly newer revision of the system.

I see some other versions of the system ROM online, mainly 2.9, 4.x, 6.0, and 6.1. I did not see this 3.5 version anywhere. Unfortunately I don't think it supports 800k drives, just a 140K drive on S6D2 on the external port. However, I hope someone with a Laser 128 on version 2.9 or 3.x prior to 3.5 can give this a try.

DOS3.3 worth it?

Hi!  As you probably already know, I am working on some text advemture code for different cc65 targets, including the Apple2enh.  I want to port it to the regular Apple2, also, and DOS 3.3.  I think that would be a usable platform, as I should have 48k RAM and think DOS 3.3 uses less RAM than ProDOS.  I have the Beneath Apple DOS etext, but it is too technical and doesn't describe how to use DOS from assembler.  Should I persue using DOS 3.3 for a text adventure?  If so, what book should I download?  I have access to an asimov mirror site.

Apple Disk ][ Controller

The disk ][ controller from another Apple IIe I own has decided that it is no longer working. It worked for a short while, in the sense that plugging in a floppy drive seemed to work fine. At one point by disconnecting and reconnecting the floppy drive (with the computer off) when I turned it on again, I smelled an unpleasant smell coming from the controller. I turned everything off.
