(dynamic) drive overlay?

ok, i'm working on an old (PI 233) system for my dad. he doesnt need something too powerful, so long as it works. well, I ran into alot of problems with this machine. firs it wouldnt boot. fixed. then, the 3.5 and 5.25" floppy I added wernt working together. fixed. now I have come across a new problem. I am trying to install windows 2000 pro (yes it will work, I have it installed on an even lowlyer PI 166, and it works just fine.) I have a 13.6gb IBM deskstar in there, and for some reason, the drive only shows up as 8.4gb by the BIOS, BUT the win 2000 installer sees the full 13.6gb. it'll partition it fine, but wont format. it gets to 100%, then it says something about a hard drive problem, or I get a BSOD "bage fault in nonpaged area".

so, this is where I am at now. I need a drive overlay so the whole 13.6 shows up for work. I tried ontrac, but it's not free, I did some diggimg, but the only other ones are manufactured for the specific HDD manufactures by ontrack.

I am curious if there is a free universal one. hell, I KNOW there is. my old armada used to have a 20gb HDD in it, and it couldnt read more than 8.4gb. I got a DDO program from SOMEWHERE, but now I dont know where.

so, could somebody help me out of this pickle?

Drive Overlays will cause not

Drive Overlays will cause nothing but problems with NT based system.

NT does not use the BIOS to access the hardware, it does everything its self. Hince the reason it sees all 13GB.

I am thinking you have a hardware problem or hardware that it is not compatable with Windows 2000. This is what I would suggest. 1st update the BIOS if there is an update. 2nd run the Hitachi Drive fitness test on the drive. 3rd Try installing on a <8GB partition. 4th run memtest 86 on it.

working.

thanks. got it all squared away. turns out the solution was to hook the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus, set it to master, then hook the hard drive to primary, & set it to slave. odd, but it works, & nothing else does.

update

just as an update, I got windows 2000 installed, no more BSODs, but now the stupid thing wont update. I got IE 6 on there, the ethernet works (using an ISA ethernet card), I can connect to the web, but when I click either "express" or "custom" on the update page, I get the "checking for the latest updates for your computer..." with the green rolling bar, and it never gets past that. dunno what is wrong. it is reading the hard drive from time to time, but the bar keeps rolling. it has for more than an hour now. when I updated the P166, it took less than 5 minutes to find the updates. perhaps if I let it sit for a couple hours while I sleep. if it is in the same place then I will know something is wrong.

any ideas?

Maybe the MS servers are over

Maybe the MS servers are overloaded because everyone is updating to Win2k now that 98/ME support is dropped. Wink

when did they drop support? maybe I should drop back to 98, as I have a compaq restore CD that MIGHt work better.

well, when do you think I should try again? it's not really important, but still.
