cannot find working version of shapeshifter

got 10.3 right now and i'm trying to run shapeshifter. the only version i can find of it is 2.3.1 from the Unsanity website. that version for some odd reason is not working. preferences says that i cannot load the preference pane. i can't find any of the other versions archived anywhere. anyone know where the older versions are available (versiontracker, etc might say it's an earlier version, but the download is 2.4)? if that's not possible, how can i get preferences to load it?

I'm not sure if it matters, b

I'm not sure if it matters, but have you rebooted? Something that changes that much of the UI might need a reboot to become effective.

hmmmm...

well... just an idea.... maybe your bezel services framework for the OS is all screwed up, i have been unable to open some / all preferences panes when that has hapened (as a result of me playing with parts of the OS that i 'shouldnt')...

but in my case the solution was to download the COMPLETE combined update from the apple website and then install it...

so, heres my suggestion:

download the 10.3.9 combined update from apple (117MB):
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcombinedupdate1039.html

install that and reboot the machine

then...

download Shapeshifter 2.3.1 again (just in case your previous download was corrupt)

http://www.unsanity.net/old/shapeshifter-231.dmg

reboot a second time, and then give it a go!! Smile

now, if that doesnt help ya... well, i dont have any other suggestions. lol

Do you have application enhan

Do you have application enhancer installed? Don't all unsanity programs need that to run?

it came with application enha

it came with application enhancer, that i can say. i downloaded it at least five times, so it's not corrupt. and 10.3.9 is not an option by any means. the computer is an ibook g3, and i have heard several accounts of 10.3.9 causing kernel panic.

well...

you said you had 10.3 installed, i made a mistake of assuming that it was the latest version. ALL of the combined updates are available as downloads from apple, and they will all repair the frameworks. however, i cannot confirm that is your problem... but again, making assumptions.... i would assume that if your system has gone wonky (sounds like it to me), then applying the most recent combined update that you are comfortable with, and then trying the app again would be a good course to take.

10.3.9
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcombinedupdate1039.html

10.3.7
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcombinedupdate_10_3_7.html

10.3.6
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcombinedupdate_10_3_6.html

10.3.5
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcombinedupdate_10_3_5_.html

10.3.4
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcombinedupdate.html

10.3.3
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1033combinedupdate.html

10.3.8, 10.3.2, and 10.3.1 combined updates were not quickly found by me.

Re: it came with application enha

I have heard several accounts of 10.3.9 causing kernel panic.

I'll be danged if it does. I have used 10.3.9 on 4 g3's (including one G3 iBook) and two G4's, and NEVER had them kernel panic. And one of them has been running 10.3.9 since it came out, and never been reloaded. The only way to have a kernel panic is to start ripping parts out of the machine while running it. you might have had a botched install. If it doesn't work the first time, install, install again. it is most likely that the install botched, or you copied over data (keychains, Prefs, applications installed) that is causing all the problems. Try doing it BEFORE you add everything
then test it for a while with no data other than the stock OS on it.

also about installing

did you have any errors the last time you installed? did it crash while installing it at ANY TIME during the last install?

You might want to clone an install from another machine and try that...

i did have crashes when insta

i did have crashes when installing 10.3, but that was my gpu overheating because my repair for it did nothing to keep it cool. that is fixed now. i'll try updates, but after having just stopped kernel panic, i'm not sure if it's all worth risking the stability of the system. then again...this is one of my seven macs, and it's a toy with my albook being my main computer right now.

Then that is your problem. Now that the Problem has been fixed, do the reinstall. Also, if you are afraid to do that, clone from the powerbook. That way you don't have to go through it. I am almost SURE it's caused by a botched install. If you don't try, you will never know, and will not get Shapeshifter working if that is the problem

well the interesting part is.

well the interesting part is...the crash was during installing from the second disc when it was installing a language. i have no idea how any applications could have been involved at that point.

mm well i reinstalled everyth

mm well i reinstalled everything from the disc to see how it would help. THANKS. it didn't do shit to help shapeshifter, but now the computer periodically freezes, and half my applications don't work anymore. what a great help after so much work in already having repaired such problems.

hmmm.... this should cover all versions of the utility

well, i have reported this to the moderator. that is really not a very good attitude to have towards people who are offering you free advice on your 7th computer. please, watch your language.

i apologise, but you're not the one who just lost the stability in a system that they had done a lot of work to acquire. i'm very aggrivated by this, and i did reinstall yet again to meet the same issue. i give up on shapeshifter. my system stability is gone due to trying to install it, and it still refuses to run.

other hardware problems?

if you end up with an unstable system, that has errors on the install... and you are installing to a cleanly formatted drive then there are greater problems here than just shapeshifter not installing correctly... maybe the drive is failing and not reading properly? maybe something else on the board is bad? maybe the torrent of panther you burned is corrupt? maybe the offical retail discs you have are corrupt? have you tried deleting things you dont need from the install process? i.e.: boot from the install disc, when it fires up run disk utility, reformat the drive, exit disk utility and return to the install, select advanced options, and when given a choice to choose packages "uncheck" unneeded languages and printer drivers?

********personal note: at one point, I myself had lost my retail copys of the panther CDs, so I "aquired" a CD set and burned the discs... well, these discs that i had burned were no good and would give errors in the same place you are describing and i was never able to install a properly working system with them [this was when i was working on a 333mhz Grape iMac] since then, i have acquired new retail discs, and the install goes problem free and results in a stable system.********

personal agrevation is no excuse to attack forum members who only want to help each other enjoy their machines to their fullest potential.

also, please note... it is only THIS time that i am not the one who messed up their system...

amazing how quick the replies

amazing how quick the replies roll in now...

the software came with another of my comptuers straight from apple. both reinstalls went without a hitch. what's wrong with it? i don't know! so please excuse my attack and drop the issue. i'm irritated by whatever problem it is evidently on the computer, but i realize no one could have predicted it now. understand my aggrivation and drop the issue, otherwise i will be angered specifically by comments rather than hardware or software failure.

...

the CD's that ship with machines, in MOST (not all) cases are machine specific, and will not work properly in other machines. They are NOT the same as retail CD's.

but anyway, good luck to you. grow up, sit down for the night and give it a shot. you are on your own now. (at least as far as I am concerned)

not too specific i think. dis

not too specific i think. discs that came with an ibook g4 933 running on an ibook g3 700? not too different. anyhow, with more time using the system after the second reinstall, its stability seems to be back. now to fix the applications. this might take time to find which ones to replace from copies off my powerbook.

Hello - If everyone could

Hello -

If everyone could breathe deeply a couple times, read the AUP, and remind themselves that it's just a forum, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.
