Re: THIS is Laughable!

I hear you Steven with some of the stuff (600 seems a tad high for a plain jane IIe system!) but at the same time I often find myself looking at some of the comments on here and wondering if you guys realize you are the exception, not the rule, when it comes to people BUYING vintage computers, ESPECIALLY from ebay.

I get a kick out of a lot of the crazy asking prices (and sometimes the crazy selling prices too) for certain things but in all reality what something sold for last year means little to nothing today. A year ago might as well have been a decade ago for some things.

Does not justify some things of course but at the same time the price is only crazy if you cannot get someone to pay for it, and many (not all, but many) of the items I have seen sell for the "Wow, can't believe that one" prices were NOT misleading listings. I am not talking the ones that tout the "Rare" Steve Jobs" Yadda yadda, they are laughable for sure (unless it is something rare!)

But, people pay what they are willing to pay and sellers take what those people are willing to pay them. Ask a crazy price, get listed in this thread! Get a crazy price and suddenly it is not laughable, it is the going rate (or on it's way to going rate unless a one-off)

Don't expect to ever see full IIe systems sell for 15 to 40 dollars. Fact is the monitors are worth more than that. Like it or not, agree with it or not the "going rate" for something last year is not "going" anymore, it is GONE. And like 99.9% of the things in life we buy, once the price goes up don't expect it to ever come back down.

I know you guys know this but I felt it was worth saying anyway.

Transwarp's point is well taken and I agree with him in this instance.

If you can find one cheaper then great, but the fact remains that is what these things sell for now.(not the 600 dollars but MANY lately have sold for 125-200)

Last year my vintage car was worth a thousand dollars less than it is this year. That is an almost 40% increase in value in 1 year! Does that make it laughable? Only if you can't get that price for it! Biggrin

I couldn't agree more with you. If we could call and end to this (type of) thread... it wouldn't be too soon for me. Yeah, this stuff used to be cheap. It's not any more - at least not on ebay. Get over it. If it looks ridiculous to you - and believe me, they often look ridiculous to me too - just roll your eyes and keep scrolling.

If anyone is looking for a "bright side" to this angle of the thread, at least when you DO get something on the cheap (or at least compared to the 'going rate') it is all the more sweet!

Yeah, I know, I would rather be able to get it 'cheap' all the time too! Biggrin

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Yeah, I know that I beat my head against the wall sometimes so long just because it feels good so when I stop. lol

But, I also know that good deals can be had on occasion on eBay.

I have gotten a few, the last few months, probably because it was a BIN item, I was right there when it was listed, and the price was exceptional.

I reckon even the IIe units are going to start increasing in price and I can see $75.00 to $125.00 for a unit (depending on condition and what is with it), but anything over that? Nope. Sorry. I refuse to be had by some Auction House that has no clue what they are trying to sell.
They haven't even tested some of these units to make sure they work. If they flip the switch and the light comes on, it's "tested" as far as they are concerned.

Yeah. I know...."Bah Humbug!" LOL

I saw that last night and immediately thought of this thread.

So is $1250 the new going rate for a IIe/IIgs conversion????

I think not!

Re: THIS is Laughable!

It's actually not too far off, things seem to go up, the last one I saw sold in August for $850. Maybe that was the exception. There were several earlier last year that sold for around $500, and some that weren't listed well that sold for less. It would seem more logical to me that if it sold for $850 in August, you MIGHT get $1000 today assuming there aren't many available.

It would fetch that much if it has a few other desirable pieces (SCSI card, Accelerators, etc.) 1250 for an empty box is just absurd.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

For what it is, it's absurd in my opinion as well. If I remember correctly, they were about 300 a year ago, and I think that's too much. I believe it's fairly rare, I've never seen one personally. There are people going after everything that's thought to be rare. From what I've seen, it seems with the items that are somewhat rare (maybe 1 sale a month or less), the previous sale sets the base for the next sale price. Because of this, and the previous sale of 850, if one sold for $1250 now I wouldn't be too surprised.

Here's the most recent two that I'm aware of.
7/28/13 for $545 (nonworking) - http://www.ebay.com/itm/300939411563
8/25/13 for $850 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/261265718169

Re: THIS is Laughable!

wow, I guess my ebay-fu is not strong, what key words or phrases do you guys use to pull up such gems? I guess 'apple ii card' is just not strong enough.

I do *not* limit my searches to the vintage computers category -- I've picked up too many mis-cat'ed goodies over the years.

I use the following on a regular basis for my A2 searches:

apple II -ipod -ipad -iphone -sata
apple iie
apple iic
apple iigs
apple 2e
apple 2c
applied engineering (in vintage computing)

Now for something new:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-II-plus-IIe-PC-Transporter-card-w-IIe-installation-kit-by-Applied-Enginee-/161196996383?pt=US_Vintage_Computing_Parts_Accessories&hash=item258816f71f

I got mine this last year, complete in the box, with all the connection and booklet, with the dual disk drive for a lot less than $200.00.

Yes. This is laughable.

I thought it was high, considering it lacked a ColorSwitcher -- but the PCT has been trending up in price for years. I have a few NIB units, but I won't sell them because the sell price difference between used and new ones hasn't been that great, only around 15%.

The working $850 one is nice looking, so I could see why a collector would be interested. Would *I* spend $850? Nah...but I also don't drive a GT3 to buy nails at Home Depot. Blum 3

Add this to the 'scratching my head' pile. I don't understand how this one got to $3k -- it's in the 10000s (which isn't high, but not exactly low either) and I don't think that motherboard is a Rev 0 is it? Or shouldn't be..

apparently, if you put a apple computer sticker on a lamp, its considered a apple product! If that's the case and people buy this junk, im definitely going to buy a stack of apple computer logo stickers and put them on doller store clipboards and sell them as 'Apple engineering clipboards' for $100 each.

Here you go.... Vintage 4" Apple Computer Die-Cut Rainbow Sticker(s) Early 1980's Apple II Era.. I have been tracking prices of these Stickers, just in case I wanted to sell some of mine...

You should be able to Offset the Cost of the Stickers by the Increased Value of the "Official Apple Product"

Re: THIS is Laughable!

It's people working around ebay's 'Best match'. I'll try to explain... If you click to see the sales, most were sold for $27.88. What most likely happened is the seller ran out/low on stock, went on vacation, or for some reason don't want to sell any/many for awhile, but expects to get more later. Because of the way ebay works, the 500+ sales put them almost at the top of best match. Canceling the listing because they have no stock will lower the ranking, but raising the price does not seem to affect it. (Go search for that item with best match, it's likely that item is at/near the top)

Most likely he'll drop the price again when he gets more, but I do see some who just raise it after getting a high rank, and keep selling the item at crazy prices.

Well, there are some advantages to owning a new joystick like that.

No oxidation on the Omron tact switches, (A subject I covered in one of my posts).

No worrying about any material coming off of the pots inside, when that happens, they must be replaced.

No concern for the wires inside being damaged.

No rust on the metal part of the joystick like I found on mine.

That rust is hard to remove.

No worrying about lubrication of the pots.

The only thing bad about it is the price.

And finally, no concern for the yellowing of the plastic.

The gray plastic from the A9M0107 5.25 disk drive is such that it has to be sanded.

I assume that the plastic on the joystick needs the same treatment.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Dorkbert,

Let me tell you about that board...

It was originally up for auction with a starting price of .99 cents.
I bid $25.00 on it.
The seller pulled the item and relisted it.
I sent him an e-mail and asked why he did this.

I also told him that these 1 Meg RAM Cards usually go (usually) between $35.00 and $65.00, depending
on condition, and how much RAM is actually on the board.

(I think I'm pretty close on that price range Plus or Minus $5.00 or so)

His response was that a Buyer had contacted him, asked him to pull the card from auction,
and then relist it at $375.00 Buy It Now, so he could buy it.

Now I have dealt with a whole bunch of folks on eBay over the years, but I have never heard of a stunt like this before.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal under eBay rules, but...

Hello Steven and dorkbert.....
just a remark besides....
it´s not a regular slinky card.....
just review it and look for the large custom chip....
did you find it.... ?
aaaaaahhhhh....
probably not..... why ? probably because it´s not the usual slinky card ?

sorry speedy, ramfactor is a slinky card, and it doesn't have a big fat asic on it either.

Well, there are some advantages to owning a new joystick like that.

The auction desc says: 'Condition: The joystick is in like new condition, box has some dirt and wear.'

Well, I have at least 10 of them (same Apple part #) that are absolutely new - haven't been out of the box ever - NIB, pristine, virgin, un-photographed, un-touched since put in the box. It may be time to sell a few.

Hello dorkbert,
seems here we face a different use of terms.....
at least here in Europe the only card mentioned with the term "slinky card"
is the original 1 MB RAM Card for the Apple II series with the large ASIC on top right corner...
RAMfactor is "RAMfactor" and RAMworks is "RAMworks II or RAMworks III"
and probably another used term:
"Cirtech card" is in general the 1 MB card made by Cirtech.... same like "Erphi card" is the 1 MB card from Erphi
but if the use of terms in USA have other variation i´ll be O.K. with it....
so of course you might call every 1 MB RAM card a "slinky card" if you like....

Dorkbert and Speedy,

I don't believe I even said anything about "Slinky Cards".
I was just talking 1 Meg cards in general.

Now, personally, I prefer the AE 1 Meg cards. RAMWorks I, II, and III (with daughter card if available).

I am not certain what was so special about this particular card though.

well speedy, slinky refers to the specific manner in which the ram is organized and accessed by the II, which is identical for ramfactor and apple II 1mb ram expansion card. Not all 1mb ram cards are slinky cards; ramworks is a very different beast. Don't know how the Cirtech card works (I think that brand is more popular in Europe. We don't see man Cirtech products in the US.)
