Re: THIS is Laughable!

Have you seen all the expensive Apple II original brown leather carry bags? I had no idea people were asking that much for those!!

The guy asking a couple of hundred bucks is the same one who was asking that ridiculous amount for a twiggy mac.

I'd pay $50 for a decent condition Apple II brown pleather bag, no more.

Exactly; not sure why anyone would pay much more. Even if it was perfect; I couldn't see them selling for much more than $100.

I just sent the seller an email asking what he thought he was doing asking so much for
a $15.00 to $25.00 SSC.

WOW Some of these folks are going of the deep end.

The SSC is likely a typo. The same seller has another one that is currently at $19.99 for the first bid and several other Apple items that are not outrageously priced (perhaps too high, but not ridiculous)

Update:
I sent the seller a message and they responded while I was typing this post. Simple mixup. The actual card is selling for $19.99 right now as mentioned.

Maybe it came from Steve Jobs' personal machine.. The seller just didn't mention it in the listing, because, well.. You Know.... You should have known it was special at that price...

Well, I do have a sort of rare card that I don't use anymore. A Wildcard 2.

This Wildcard is selling north of $150. Maybe I'll put mine up and see what I can get for it.

Hello Steven,
probably you missed checking his other items....
seems to be a wrestling fan of WWF.....
maybe he was to close to the fighting area, when one was lifted outside of the fighting area...
maybe the lifted wrestler had choosen to use him as floodground for landing....
and maybe some damage has remained from such incidence....
do anabolic steroides affect also the brain ? i don´t know... maybe they do...
several maybe´s why he left reality...
seems you don´t have to smoke to leave reality - there seem to be alternate door to "leave for outer space"....

While not laughable, this auction is for a water "damaged" mainboard.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/201115604317?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

There are way too many mineral deposits for this to work reliably in all but the very driest of conditions. 20% RH or less is a good guess.

Look at the white smudges near the RAM. And the rust on the Composite out and joystick connector. Not to mention the overall whiteness of the back.

Feel sorry for the guy bidding on it. Unless the buyer has intentions of washing and rinsing with deionized water.

Hello Keatah,
that might not be the only problem with such board...
seller located at TN. Seems the board has been stored in location with very high humidity...
or "recued" from formerly flooded housing area....
that causes severe destructive processes at the leaded soldering points....
after cleaning - the entire board probably must be resoldered....
not to guess about the conditions of the chips on board....

maybe we´ll have to welcome a new member here... the victim bidding on that board....

I did not notice the water damage when I looked at this item. It was a quick glance.
My question about this MB was it's price.

Why buy a MB for $50.00 when you can buy an entire unit for less than $50.00?

Really? I looked for months and the best I could do for a tested machine was nearly $200. Mind you it came with two DISK II drives (controller too), a PCPI-z80 card, an extended 80 column card, a SSC compatible serial card, a wildcard-2, a printer card and a modem as well as a set of DOS 3.3 disks and was in near 10/10 condition. However, I never saw a unit, even bare, go for $50-$75 the entire time I was looking. Where do you have to go to find that?

Hi,

I see buy it now auctions priced all the time in the $75 range. I'm talking bare computers with no accessories or upgrade cards though. $200 for the computer described above sounds average. Heck I've seen Wild cards sell for over $150!

The only possible reason I can think of is to get that exact revision in a convenient timespan. IIRC there are 7 or 8 revisions of the //e platinum board.

But, anyone who is into tracking revisions in detail (I am not one to do so) could maybe comment on the differences in the //e platinum?

The Graforth Connection:

I have looked at that particular item several times myself.
I had the same question.
I wonder if I should tell the seller that this disk is available online for free?
I wonder if that would entice him to drop his price down?

Hmmm.

I'll have to think about it.

@gsmcten

I wonder if that would entice him to drop his price down?

There is no point, let him take advantage of a 'customer' if he can. I know several well healed people that will pay almost anything for unique items. They are, shall we say, 'young money' collectors. They would not want the language, they want the language on the original disk just because at $1000 they know that most regular folks cannot afford it. If you tell them that regular folks are not that stupid, they dismiss you.

One in particular invited me up to his penthouse condo a few years back for some wine and cheese along with some polite conversation. After a really nice bottle of wine he said cost about $90 he brought out a bottle he said cost him 'over $900'. Hey, I'll be the first to admit I'm no connoisseur of fine wine, but this stuff was not palatable. I told him the $90 wine was fantastic, but I was not fond of the $900+ item. He accused me of having an uneducated palate. I checked later. It turned out to be an odd vintage of a not too bad wine that usually sold around $60 a bottle. It was a French appellation (sorry, I forgotten which) wine from an area that received too much rain that year. A few bottles of it had gotten out, but the rest had been destroyed at the winery(s). According to the broker, it was sold at a premium as a collectable, not to be consumed. PT Barnum was a genius.

BTW, all the cheese was excellent!

@Keatah

What would someone do with 475 of Moon Patrol?

Sell them at $7.95 apiece over the next 5 years?

Well, if they did not sell then, what makes me think they will sell now... see above...

The nostalgia market for computers is growing in leaps and bounds.

Steven & sfahey,

Seriously!? How did he come up with those two INSANE prices?! Over $4k for an apple II power supply? My serial #1466 rev 0 power supply sold for just over $300. That was wayyyy more valuable then the power supplies he has.

And what is prototype about these two? I would like to know. Even if these are prototypes (which I doubt); they will not sell for 1k. Let alone 4k. Hes asking way too much.

Last I heard, there was a shortage of that "special stuff" they have there. Maybe this seller bought it all up? Smile .

Being allergic, it kind of makes me want to stay away, but I digress...

To each their own, I suppose.

Past that, I don't have anything to add really, so I'll just marvel at the stupidity of it all Biggrin .

Well, I think I finally got through to the seller of the $1,000.00 and $5,000.00
"Prototype" Power Supplies. The $1,000.00 power supply is now $100.00.
He has not yet changed the price of the 15000 Series power supply.
I imagine he's still considering it as no one has bid on either of them.

I did have to stop and think about the fact that the 15000 series Serial Number
would place this particular power supply about smack in the middle of the Original Apple II production run(possibly?).

Would this be something that anyone would pay "extra" for?
I am not sure.

Any thoughts?

It occurred to me that these Power Supplies might not be 120VAC Prototypes, but maybe for 240VAC.. My Apple ][ has a 120/240VAC Power Supply, with a Switch, and the Label has Hand Corrections in Black Sharpy. But there is no indication that is the case....

I did have to stop and think about the fact that the 15000 series Serial Number
would place this particular power supply about smack in the middle of the Original Apple II production run(possibly?).

Would this be something that anyone would pay "extra" for?
I am not sure.

Any thoughts?

Steven :)

Maybe $100? tops...

He has not yet changed the price of the 15000 Series power supply. I imagine he's still considering it as no one has bid on either of them.

Probably reconsidering his 'power supply and demand' prospects.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Hello David,
what´s wrong with it ?
selling somethimg worth 5 cent for 5 bucks ?
It´s just in the same proportions we talk about here....
it´s just the "normal" relation to try selling a thing 1000% of it´s "real value"....
it´s just the "value" itself that changes....
the leap from 5 cent to 5 bucks is same far as the leap from 50 bucks to 5000 bucks.....
it just indicates same abuse of strong drugs and / or effective abuse of "native medicine"
i just wonder about his intended price, if he had found a bunch of 100 sleeves...
would he give some price reduction from 500 bucks down to 499 bucks and one for free ?
