Re: THIS is Laughable!

How about this thing I came across while looking for a Mac? An "Original Apple II 1A2S2 094662 + Software + Booklets Guaranteed Item in very good to excellent condition" which is really a very yellowed Apple //e with the 3 and - key caps missing (but don't worry, he supplies them too). There are several books and a couple of disks, as promised. All for the low, low price of $799.95 (or 24 easy monthly payments of $39)!

I know. I got my //e from a friend, together with an ImageWriter II and a joystick (which I stupidly broke), a monitor, two Disk ][s, and over forty disks, all for $85. I think a good price for such a lot might be around $150 to $200.

Also, manuals can be downloaded from the Internet. I have some of the manuals pictured.

There's nothing particularly interesting inside, either: just an 80-column card, a Super Serial card, and a Disk ][ card. This lot is maybe $100.

Not only are the key caps missing, but by his admission, the key stems are broken too. Pathetic.

When is "used" used?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/322499347014?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

If bought at an estate sale and the boxes have been opened, it's used, not new.

Any opinions?

Plus a couple of Apple II's for your viewing pleasure:

A2S1-4984 doesn't seem overpriced at all, and I suspect it will sell for well over $1000 (even with the non-original motherboard). Or am I missing something?

That ROM card is way overpriced for what has been selling on eBay.

Love me some vintage Fairchild chips. They're the guys that invented the production techniques for all modern ICs. But at this price, I'm content to only look.

I'm confused about the pricing or the "rarity" of the Apple Lisa 1. I'm pretty sure I have seen 3 listed in a month. One was broken down for parts. I highly doubt they are as rare as people suggest. I'm sure since the pricing is going up, there will be a lot more being listed.

I'm really not sure about this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/222495883594?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

All I can say is that this is the first complete Lisa 1 with the 5 1/4 inch drives that
I have ever seen.

And a Transwarp IIgs:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/112392511722?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Is that price right?

And an Apple II Motherboard where the seller will not show the Serial Number:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/112393472850?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Makes me wonder...

Is it just me or does the front panel not match the rest of case? Which makes me wonder how hard it would be to "frankenbuild" one of these by starting with a Lisa 2 and swapping in parts purchased from eBay.

Also, see this one from 2012:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-BOXED-APPLE-LISA-1-COMPUTER-SYSTEM-COMPLETE-RESTORED-amp-WORKING-/150856267064?nma=true&si=fdEqQneVu8pRIL2JiwDu%252FsdEIHo%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Notice the room (the dinette the machine is sitting on and the corner piece behind the system) and compare it with pics of the one now for sale...

And an Apple II Motherboard where the seller will not show the Serial Number:

Steven :)

Rev 04 with soldered RAM select blocks and Apple II+ ROMS. You can assume between 792X and 801X Smile (i.e. not worth what he's asking regardless, even if known working). One of these (listed as tested and working) sold a couple of weeks ago for $125.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Believe me, the Wozniak machine was an authentic example. I question the current auction because I see slight anomalies. Recently a faceplate & twiggy module untested was sold for record prices. Easy to retrofit a later 2/5 with untested twiggys. Nevertheless, they are rare twiggys & a nice Lisa 1 faceplate. If you add the acquisitions, the seller IMO has a $50K reserve.. Personally, I feel this is a retrofited 2/5 machine. Why I would I suggest? Because I am the proud owner of a Prototype Lisa 1 that was converted by Apple into an early 2/5 that contains the only G ROMS known in existence. Apparently G ROMS work with both Lisa 1 & 2 configurations. I wish I could demonstrate this but complete Lisa 1's seem to be too rich for me. I own more than 1 great Apple & a few good ones too. I am a collector also. I may sell a few typical machines someday. I promise you one thing, what I will sell will be true and I will always respect the opinion of this forum even if you think the price maybe exceptional. I know you guys have better machines than me. We are of the same vintage. I know some, many of you know some more. For me, it's not about price but accuracy and also authenticity. Provenance and packaging is what helps push the value. So perhaps the time has come to keep those eBay receipts... This is a very knowledgable forum and good people are here.

Thank you all. Lisa 1 IMO will be eventually valued like an Apple I, but it has to be correct, working and complete.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

MyPal,

You are absolutely correct.

In a lot of cases, yes, it's about the price of an item
because everyone up here and throughout the Apple II
community knows (except the Seller) what it's actually worth.
But, in cases like this one, and several others that have been and
currently are on eBay, It is the item itself.

Like I said, I have never seen one like this.

Frank Zappa once asked "Is that a real Poncho, or a Sears Poncho?"

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Thank you Steven. Price aside, people like you and other members of this forum are historical eyes that prospective purchasers have the privilage to consider sound opinion when it comes to the real deal. An expert knows the ROMS, they know the chipset dates, they know the chassis stamps, they know the chassis mould releases, they know the mb dates, they know the PSUs for the production periods. This is what matters most, forensics determines price. That said, those who are able bring back a production correct machine with forensic vigilance to the satisfaction of expert opinion deserve credibility.

I'm not saying categorically the recent twiggy module sale is exactly the same as what is in this machine, but the facia plastic against the rest of the machine doesn't look quite right even though Lisa 1, and if the twiggys are not tested, that means they are not working. Certainly, they're undetected, wouldn't you say?

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Your discussion brings up a good point, can you tell by the serial numbers on the twiggy drives if they correspond to a particular machine? I'm sure considering there present valuation that they are so important historically, there must be a wealth of information, and websites dedicated to them. Anyway, has anyone bothered to message the seller and ask them?

Is there an Apple Lisa 1 Owners Club?
Is there an Apple Lisa 1 Registry?

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Is there something special about the Mac Classic II that has slipped my radar? That's a bit of coin.

Personally I always felt that it was a revival machine of little significance. My collectibility line stopped at the great SE/30 & ColoUr Classic.

SuperDrives easily sell for that..

They both use Deceptive Practices in their auction:

I don't ever remember II Plus units with a Transwarp Card ever being this high:

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Seller of Transwarp II Plus is from Northbrook IL a northern suburb of Chicago. There are quite literally no homeless or poor people living there. $1,000 is a drop in the bucket for a town of people living in million dollar houses.
