Hello javstar,
Nobody want´s to prevent you from throwing away your money - if you want to do so....
but we all remember the quality of the softshell cases Apple sold in that days for the Apple II and later for the MAc
with the embossed logo....
do you realy believe they would have supplied their techicians with SUCH cases and SUCH stickers without embossed logo???

Argument could be made that there isn't enough volume to justify the cost? That said, I think that brief case is just a junker with a sticker too. There's no evidence to support the seller's claim.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

I believe the item is authentic and from the time period. It was actually used by an early Apple Co. engineer/technician. There is period dirt under the sticker, but less of it. The sticker also seems to be peeled on the lower-right corner. The adhesive has collected the right amount of debris for its age. Furthermore there are indentations & discoloration in the foam the correspond to it (case) having held a mainboard. And finally, one side of that foam is more grimey, it had collected skin oil and plating from the board from the user constantly unplugging and plugging in cards and connections. I'd say this is the real thing!

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Sarcasm aside, of course that's a '70s briefcase, with a sticker plastered on a side, and we could argue it was used by a technician to carry apple parts. Now, I used to carry apple floppies in my backpack that had an apple logo too. Does that gives it a value of 18k? I do t think so, but there is a sucker born every day that will try to sell it or worst: buy it. Is just pathetic that the gentleman thinks it has such value, and creates a great diversion for us.
Cheers

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Well Guys and Gals,

If you go up on eBay right now, you will find several Original Apple II's, an Apple II Plus, and an Apple /// that are (supposedly) props from the just released movie "Jobs".

The problems that I am having with these items is that they do not have the following:
- No COA, or any other paperwork stating that they were actually used in the movie.
(I will cover this again in a minute.)

- None of them have shots of the Bottom Plate showing the Serial Number.

-None of them have interior shots showing (at least)the Motherboard Serial Number.

I have contacted this seller and asked about some sort of provenance for his items. Any sort of contract showing that they were actually used, or rented for use would be fine, but he has none. He instructs folks to go to a Movie Production website which contains no information.
I also sent another email today asking for more pictures (including Case and Motherboard Serial Numbers).
So far, no changes to the auction listings.

On the Plus Side, he has a pretty low starting price for the Original Apple II units.
This makes me wonder if they are actually Apple II units, or a II Plus with the lables changed. It also make me wonder if this guy knows what he is doing.

Go up and take a gander.
Tell me what you think.

Steven :)

Just an update on "matt_five_star_studios"; aka the guy selling props from the JOBS movie.

I just purchased two of his apple IIe's from off ebay. They were both painted. This might bother some so I figured I would post it. I'm sorry I didn't notice while there in person, I was more focused on finding a rare card than the condition of the computers.

I see plenty of bidder stoopidity on eBay. This is proportionately one of the most egregious examples:

I see stuff like that happen every day on eBay.

Well this is getting interesting. I've sold my Atari Megafile 30 (HDD) yesterday on eBay and got 200 EUR :O for it. Payed about 45 EUR in april this year.

Let's have a look, what the eastern Europe people are calling for an Apple IIc+: http://r.ebay.com/lhg8SH

Going in the opposite direction (what people are asking/claiming vs. what people are paying) Found this one too funny.
I did not realize Apple printed their serial numbers in reverse, starting at 500,000 and going backwards. Apparently the 476 thousandth disk drive made is one of the "earliest Disk ][ drives ever made"

When it comes to Disk II units, what is considered a low s/n? 100,000 or less? 10,000 or less?

That's pretty subjective. To me, 50K or lower is 'low'. 10K and lower gets me interested. 1K and lower causes me to obsess. 100 and lower, SHUT UP AND TAKE MY 401K MONEY ALREADY!

$100+ for a terminal program manual?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hayes-Micromodem-IIe-SmartcomI-Manual-5-25-Software-1983-ships-worldwide-/151146298101?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2331057af5

$299 for generic cards that have been placed on paper on top of carpet? Too much static damage!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Computer-Cards-For-Apple-II-Computers-/271300853957?pt=US_Vintage_Computing_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3f2aca80c5

Scott Adams games going for 1k? While initially it seems high, it isn't too bad.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-II-Software-Vintage-Adventure-International-Savage-Island-New-Unopened-/380749606013?pt=Video_Games_Games&hash=item58a671ec7d

Then we come down in price to Eliminator and RearGuard for $800 and $600 respectively.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-II-Software-Vintage-Adventure-International-Scott-Adams-ELIMINATOR-/271302107121?pt=Video_Games_Games&hash=item3f2add9ff1

While there is nothing special about or unique about those games, they were among my most favorite when I was on my "Defender" arcade game kick back in the day.

But maybe we shouldn't be laughing at some of these prices. As time goes on and more mature people (with good funding) come into the scene I can only expect prices to rise from here. Like this one -- http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datamosts-Conquering-Worlds-for-the-Apple-II-/151146481442?pt=Video_Games_Games&hash=item2331084722

I have a new-in-box Zaxxon and Stellar-7 and a camping buddy caught sight of it and offered me 300 on the spot for both! Said he'd love to play them again with some 80's music rolling. They weren't for sale of course. Instead we discussed getting ADT or CFFA and Asimov and a beater Platinum //e.

And what's with this? These seem to be Wikipedia articles printed and put into a book format.. for 60$ ?? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-II-Processor-Cards-/380671985039?pt=US_Nonfiction_Book&hash=item58a1d1858f

And it is getting nothing but worse.
I just shelled out $100.00 for a 1979 Apple II Plus motherboard.
I just don't know who I an most mad at...
Myself, or the *$@#%(*&^ that bid $99.00 15 minutes before the auction was over.
He only bid once, which made me wonder after the fact if he was a shill.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Actually, yes....I did realise it was Australian dollars on the Oz market...that's why I was keen as I live there.

Now, would you have paid over $400 US for it because the dollars are close to the same in value, and yes, the Ozzie market is smaller by far, and things are slightly pricier. But not by that much in most cases. My main focus is on the IIc's, so I'm watching them closely.

The one and only thing about this that got me in was its a 240V native. Saves me worrying about converters or blowing it up one day forgetting to use a converter because it's from the US. I actually shop the European market a bit because of this fact, though I will admit, Europe's worse price wise.

So, yes, things are more expensive here, but not to that degree, at least they haven't been for the last 6 months. This is a big jump.

Too many overpriced ebay items to list here right now.
So I figured I'd tell you what I do
when I get upset with myself for doing
something I shouldn't have,
or spendinding too much for something
that I could have done without.

I sit in the Lotus position facing the rising sun and chant:

"Ohwa-Tasi-Ligoo-Siam."

(you have to remember to say it faster each time and keep chanting until you get it)

Transwarp,

I cannot guess as this is the first one I have seen.
I would think that it could be worth $200.00 to $300.00 used,
but I am not bidding as I have no use for it.

I have said many times:
"It is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it."
It may be that someone is willing to pay $500.00 for it,
but that someone won't be me.

Re: THIS is Laughable! Or the new Normal

Lots of items on ebay right now.
Many of them overpriced.
Apple II Plus computers are being priced at $150 to $300 each.
These are bare with parts missing.
Apple IIc's going up for $200 to $500 each.

An IIc???

It is either the fact that Christmas is almost here,
or sellers expect users and collectors to pay their prices.

Is this the new "Normal"?

Thoughts invited... Smile

I just sold a II+ w/ 2 disk drives for $200. But it was fully tested. Theres an untested apple II+ with a Apple II lid thats already over $300! Not sure whats up with that.

The IIc prices are just plain weird. No one's paying for them. Look under completed listings, most are in the red. (unless they were priced right) I sell them for around $65 tops fully tested. Of course that price doesn't include a monitor...

Did you realy expect anything else to happen ?
It´s now time for a "cleanup" and tossing off garbage....
there are enough guys and ladies around going nuts now....

and after selling garbage now - it will be time in end of January to search seriously for items missing....

But one thing is also for sure.... if we now enter every outraged price on Apple items at ebay...
- well then the counter on this thread will easily exceed 550 postings till christmas....

Speedy and all,

Yes Speedy,
I remember, but I forgot for a bit when I went up there.
You are absolutely correct.
People are pulling out thier "stuff" and trying to cash in.
What makes me angry is that they think we are stupid.
They think that they can get away with selling garbage because of Christmas.
Well...It's the unsuspecting folks that are getting caught up in this mostly.
They want to get back into retro-computing and are not as knowledgable as they think they are.
Sorry, I'm starting to get on my soapbox.
I'll stop now.

That is the explanation I received when I asked the seller what he meant by that statement.

He also says that this unit is a low serial number.
Well, I'm not sure if what he is saying is true as I am not as knowledgable about Mac numbers as I am Apple II numbers.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

He also says that this unit is a low serial number.
Well, I'm not sure if what he is saying is true as I am not as knowledgable about Mac numbers as I am Apple II numbers.
Does anyone know? :)

well Steven - there are 2 very different definitions out there:
1st by math:
first 10% out of given amount of units
if only 10.000 units have been made - first 1000 can claim to have "low" serial number......
but if 100.000 units have been made - the first 10.000 can claim to be low.....
at the other hand a number by itelf without relation to amount of made units is worthless......
for example 9875 will be in the first case one of the very last units while in second case it´s still low....

2nd definition by ebayseller:
if i claim the item to have low serial number and i don´t even know how many have been made....
i can demand for 5 time to 10 time higher price than item value is in reallity
but if i claim serial number to be very low i can demand for 100 time worth of real value.....
most customers at ebay don´t know anything at all about amount of units made.....

but i do want 100 time of real value because i think:

....... "$$$" ........"$$$"
.

................"$"
................"$"
................"$"
.
.
.
........"$"............"$"
..........."$"......."$"
.............."$$$$"
.

and it´s X-mas ahead and Santa is yelling "$$$ Bells, $$$ Bells, Take that cash away....
oh what fun to get that cash - and drag it all away...."

therefor i would allways choose to get lots of bucks from stupid customers
and allways claim my items to be

"never used!" ............- if you believe this you also believe in the easter bunny
"very low serial number!" - if you believe this you still believe that Santa brings the gifts
"ultra rare item" ........- if you believe this you must also believe in the story with the "bees and the flowers"..
"a onetime find of lifetime" - if you belive this you must have been brought by the stork or the "baby airforce"

so at the one side we are at Einstein and relativity
and at the other side we are where ? .... at pure greed
and pure "Xmas sales....
you still haven´t cleaned out your storage ???
Start immediatly - there are only 5 to 6 weeks left for "panic buyers".....

Re: THIS is Laughable!

I don't know anything about quantity or production for Mac machines. But 4284 seems low enough.

One thing.. You'd think the seller would take time and make a presentable background for photography. Especially with a slightly more expensive item than typical old computers. This machine is coming from a goddamned pigsty it appears! Just imagine the stink when you open the box. If the seller lives like a hoarder and doesn't care, what's to say they don't care about the auction item. It's just..so..dumpy looking.
