And there's a bid on the Apple II+ starting at 250! There's nothing special about this machine, is there? Low S/N maybe?

There's nothing special about it in my opinion. It's pretty much a standard II+ with no rare upgrades. Also It's hardly tested.

For comparison I just sold a II+ with 2 disk drives that was in better condition & tested for $150 BIN. I made my price from averaging out the II+ completed listings as I do with all my auctions.

I'm not complaining, I'm just surprised someone would want to pay that much for a bog standard II+ with no accessories that's not fully tested.

What's more surprising to me is that the Apple II previously mentioned still hasn't sold for $600! It must not have been seen by the right person yet lol. If I come up with some cash I'll probably buy it just to turn a profit. I have a rev 4 motherboard sitting on my workbench that I could throw in there. According to my previously mentioned completed listing searches; Apple II's that are not fully original are still selling anywhere from $900-$1300!

But please somebody else buy it before I do! I really shouldn't spend $600 right now lol.

Transwarp,

He dropped the price after I (and apparently several others) contacted him about what he had.

I see now. How much was he asking before the negotiations?

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Transwarp,

Starting price was $4k.
BIN price was $6k.

I started lausghing when I saw the 1983 tag on the MB.
That's when I knew it was a FrankenII.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

HO MAN! Yea neither 6k OR 4k is worth it for what that computer is! At least you got it negotiated down...

And to add to the IIe craze:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-IIe-Computer-Workstation-A252128-Apple-Monitor-2-5-25-Unidisk-Drives-/390620325145?pt=US_Vintage_Computers_Mainframes&hash=item5af2c92519

and another from the same seller:

If I'm not mistaken I used to buy from the above seller A LOT until the price raises. Nice person, answers questions diligently. Who knows, maybe they are ahead of the curve lol.

Also, This is not laughable but it does show deals can still be had, you just have to be there when they come:

FFFwwwhheeww.. With prices like that I could sell my entire collection and pay off the Bugatti..

Here's one more in case it was missed. Though it is a nice sample..
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-Microsoft-old-logo-RAMCARD-memory-board-for-Apple-II-II-1980-16k-rare-/221243362407?pt=US_Vintage_Computing_Parts_Accessories&hash=item338321cc67
This one, IIRC, started bidding around 400, then dropped to 350 last week, and is now at 300. When it reaches 150-200 I wouldn't mind picking it up. It *IS* Microsoft's first consumer product to be sold on retail shelves I believe.

I really do like the font and color and style of the artwork on the box. Very attractive, then and now.

You know, those articles in Baron's and CNN and stuff? The ones about the auctions? ..I bet people read them and are now on the hunt for 2 series machines and all manners of paraphernalia. Maybe a new craze is starting?

Hi people...

Not knowing the IIes, and you all seem very critical of a lot of the pricing on eBay, I was wondering if this was a good deal.

You'll pay more than normal for a box, too. That's a premium to a collector. If you want to actually use a machine, start with one without a box...

You just have to see it:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=271240394586&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123#ht_159wt_906

The seller calls it "Unique".
I call it other choice words.
Besides being overpriced for what it is.

I've got to say that it is unique; there isn't another one quite like it. Now whether or not that is a good thing is a matter for debate...

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Thanks everyone....I've regained control of my senses.

A month ago I decided to get back into the Apple II world after 30 years, but the plan was to just go for the IIc which was my only exposure to it. For some reason the bug bit me and I started looking at IIgs's...why? Cause I remember always wanting one, IIe's cause my friends at the time loved them. Oh, and don't forget a dot matrix printer. Hell, may as well get an old mac classic as well!. Ohhh, look...there's a quadra 700 going cheap! Ooowww...that Apple LaserWriter looks good!

I think we'd all call that.....losing the plot!

Sanity has returned! I've taken a dozen plus items OFF my watch list, and the spree is coming to an end. 3 things left in my bidding....and minor things at that. Hope I lose the bid on the LaserWriter!!!

But I will admit...I have a few to many IIcs and accessories to actually comfortably explain this to the wife! Oh well, you only live once. But boy, have I got some mods planned for some old IIc cases I now own.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

I swear I just sold one of these for $65 and mine was in better condition and fully tested AND came with a diagnostics disk.

This guy want's $299.99 for an untested, dirty... wait for it... Woz edition IIgs!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-computer-signed-by-WOZ-apple-II-signed-by-WOZ-/321165388407?pt=US_Vintage_Computers_Mainframes&hash=item4ac6f2ea77

It's been debunked time and time again that these are not rare, yet people still keep asking way out of there league prices. I mean the MOST I have every seen one sell for in this kind of condition was $150, and it had UPGRADES! I think there was supposed to be 10,000-30,000 of these "limited edition" models made. They are cool and garner a little more revenue, according to my sales about $15 more lol. Keep in mind that's $15 more then the $50 regular one's sell for, you never see a regular ROM 1 IIgs sell for over $75, not unless it's just immaculate or has some certain rare upgrades. (Think AE_)

Oh and one more: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-8-Apple-Computer-II-IIe-Owner-Manual-Book-Reference-Text-Card-Modem-Software-/160943290785?pt=US_Vintage_Computing_Manuals_Merchandise&hash=item2578f7b9a1

The price isn't quite laughable, but what is funny is this guy denied my $45 offer for what essentially is trash. I'm the only one that's EVER given him an offer, and that was all the way back in February! He's probably regretting turning down my offer, only reason I wanted any of that junk was for the one Unidisk 3.5 drive Owners Manual.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

It's the monitor stand. Remember a while back that guy who was trying to sell that new one for over $900.00. Just kidding.....

Maybe someone took a gamble that this was a low serial number IIe as it is an older one. Who knows, but this is getting very frustrating and it shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.

Everyone thinks their IIe systems are worth a fortune and when they start regularly getting the prices I will have to think long and hard if I will want to put all of mine up there or not.

Oh well. I am leaving for KansasFest tomorrow hope to meet some Fritters there.....

Re: THIS is Laughable!

"..start regularly getting the prices." That's the key, getting the prices.

I was thinking of selling one of my //e systems, actually just the console-computer part itself. It's in reasonable shape and super-ultra-mega-clean. I'm talking class-10 data recovery clean-room-clean! Because this particular unit is one of a kind and has a history behind it - you're getting a helluva deal. Just listen!

It was connected to NASA & JPL computers. And it did BBS duty back in the waReZ days. Not only that, but this one single computer probably did the most varied of tasks of any //e out there. Ever! From gameplaying to hardcore scientific research. From the 4th-grade school room to the data processing lab. And now for the last 12 years it has served light duty as a home word-processor, a note taker. And in its most recent role it is serving as vintage decor. That's right folks! This computer did it all. It has even been sent back to the factory many years ago for a repair and upgrade to "enhanced" status. I even wrote Steve Jobs a brief letter asking him to top off the "Apple-ness" essence while it was there in the shop. So you can be assured this computer will last and last. No DOA.

Bidding starts at $500.00 USD.

PM if interested.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

I've been reading this thread for quite some time now, so I think it's about time I chime in.

The auction (or, rather, the Buy It Now) listing in the last post is absurd!

For $2,000, you get an Apple II (allegedly Plus), in unknown working condition, with single disk drive and mis-matched Apple Monitor III.

It's really a shame, too, since from time to time, I've toyed with the possibility of getting an early Apple II for my collection, due in part to it's historical significance. Sigh... I guess I'll settle for a late model Platinum IIe for now.

By the way, I'd like to note that a similar thing is beginning to happen to Macintoshes (particularly the early compacts), though it's not nearly as pronounced, yet.

c

p.s. Even more historically significant is the Apple I, but there's no way in the universe anybody would even come close to affording one of those nowadays (unless, of course, they have a few million dollars to throw around). Sick.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

The //e Platinum has a cheaply built case, the keyboard sags and so does the edge by the spacebar. Not much, a few mm. You also need to reflow/resolder the keyswitches if any keys don't work.

Once you get that in order, the Platinums are very very reliable, especially the memory. You won't be disappointed!

Re: THIS is Laughable!

I can understand the high prices of The original Apple 1 and the early Apple II's. It's just these regular IIe & II+ machines that I can't see spending any where over $200 on. Yet people are listing these computers for well over $200.

I mean let me put it this way; I sell these computers regularly. The most I've ever sold an Apple IIe for was $165.00. It was well tested, in good shape, all the keys worked, well everything worked. It came with several average upgrade cards, a monitor II & 2 uni disk drives. + cords & a Diagnostics disk.

So what does the above computer sound like to you? I'll tell you what it sounds like to me. Bog standard!

Meanwhile, a lot of people are asking 2-5 times my asking price. Yet their computers are usually fairly dingy and yellowed, completely untested or at most just powered on. It's just silly.

The good thing is, is that the IIe's & II+'s are still fairly common, meaning many recyclers and people are willing to sell them for decent prices.

Also there's still a lot of sellers that are not going for the high price craze. The reason why? Because high priced computers DON'T SELL. Ask me how I know lol.

What's really annoying is when people raise their prices after not selling their item, almost as if their being spiteful!

Also let me say that there are exceptions in terms of rare or desirable peripherals included with these old computers. That will drive the price way up.

But a bog standard II+ for $2000? Well, yea. Just watch it, it wont sell.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Transwarp, Keatah, and All,

Yes.
I was going to place the $2,000.00 II Plus up here, but Transwarp beat me to it. lol

There's an eBay seller in Texas that is selling Platinum IIe's with a starting price of $4.00 each. Not bad, except the units are not in the best of shape and need work.
Not that I mind the work they need, I like restoring the units.

There was also a regular IIe that had a BIN price of $39.00 (or best offer).
I placed a best offer of $25.50, because this unit too was in not good shape and was missing keys. The seller refused my offer.
I guess he's holding out for the extra $14.00.

The trend seems to be; "Sell it Fast and get as much as you can no matter what the condition."

Do these folks think that Apple II users are STUPID?!

Thats why I started this thread in the firat place.
We are not dumb.
We love Apple II's
One of these days they will realize That they cannot take us for granted.

My two cents,

Steven

Re: THIS is Laughable!

It would be nice to see something like a community sanctioned price list. A modern-day Suggested Retail Price List. Something that lists community suggested prices. The prices would need to apply to both buy & sell to be fair. And it should cover some of the most popular peripherals and consoles. It should be a guideline to allow noobs to not get taken advantage of, and at the same time provide for a small profit for sellers.

It should be simple, and have a 3-star rating. Like terrible/scrap/parts, good/solid/works, NIB MIB ultra-excellent, signed by the people that mined the ores that went into the metal..! The bulk would simply fall into two stars.

Things on the list could be the computer consoles
Common interface cards, parallel, serial
Drives
Manuals
Cables
Modems (especially the Hayes MicroModem II with microcoupler)
Accelerators
Memory boards
Specialty items and uber-rare stuff

Maybe it is practical to do this, maybe not, IDK. I do know I don't have time myself to maintain it today, but in the wintertime, sure..

Hello Keatah,
the idea sounds nice for a wintertime task.... but in fact that list should also realize the local country
specifics... we had in several threads the topic that for example the units have higher prices related to high transportation cost resulting from maintanance and repairs like in Australia or the fact that the prices are
slightly a bit higher in Europe...

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Any sort of listing detailing how much they're really worth probably wont work. It flys in the face of the old 'let the market decide' adage. That some people are ripping others off has always been the case. That others are being honest and fair in setting their price has also always been the case.

The buyer HAS to do their research first to avoid a bad deal. I'm one of those buyers who is fast going from 'I just want it' to 'your kidding me?' when I view these things now. And all the people who are on this forum are helping me with each highlighting you do of an over priced Apple model. But I made mistakes initially, probably still am, but the mistakes are getting smaller and less numerous.

As for postage costs, I'm one of those stuck in that predicament. However, when at one point I can get a complete 3 boxed apple Iic system from the US to Oz for like 40-50$, but another seller says $150 is what eBay is telling him, I know who I'm buying from.

The market place will sort itself out, just like gold, oil and a thousand other things, ultimately, supply & demand takes care of these things.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Keatah, Speedy,

I agree with Speedy in that people are going to list this stuff at the prices they feel they can get based on what others are doing. (Case in point - The junk pile of Apple IIe suff someone in my own back yard is trying to get 1200.00 for) I agree we will not be able to stop this.

However, I think Keatah is correct in that if we (and yes I do mean we - I would be willing to help with the winter project Smile ) could develop a list that people could use as part of their research as a reference guide we may be able to help stop people(newer collectors) from getting ripped off buying the first thing they see no matter the cost.

As I said, I would be willing to devote some time to this over the Winter.

Thanks,
Jay

Well it does contain the handwritten receipt from time of purchase. That, and a mystery box of disks. Who knows what treasures await the savvy buyer! That's gotta be worth something.

On another note I was quite thrilled to see a Hayes MicroModem II trade hands for $75.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

I'd like to add some reason to all this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Apple-Mac-IIc-Model-Computer-w-Power-Cord/300936880908?rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D261%26meid%3D81808440413767607%26pid%3D100005%26prg%3D1088%26rk%3D5%26rkt%3D5%26sd%3D130953636381%26

$10 starting bid with $25 BIN is quite reasonable, I think.

Definitely NOT laughable!

c

p.s. By the way, eBay isn't the only place where these prices happen. To illustrate, I just looked around on Amazon at some random computer related things (MS Windows, in this case), and I came up with this:http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Server-English-1-8CPU-Version/dp/B002JOOI30/ref=sr_1_7?s=software&ie=UTF8&qid=1374694704&sr=1-7&keywords=windows+xp. I'm not sure what the going rate is for that OS, but $10,000 seems kinda high. I thought it was maybe $500 at most.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

I fully expect:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-IN-BOX-VINTAGE-APPLE-IIc-FACTORY-SEAL-UNOPENED-BOX-/251309705944?pt=US_Vintage_Computers_Mainframes&hash=item3a8339cad8#ht_721wt_906

..would get $3200. More would not be surprising. And the seller would be absolutely foolish to accept anything less than 3000.

Not too long ago I sold a 3rd Gen 40GB iPod, NIB MIB SIB for $1,500 and change. Boxed and unopened Apple products increase in value after about 10-years.

This was going for $2,000 last week, now it's down to $1,300
http://www.ebay.com/itm/300938308581?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:VRI&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2661

While I've got many prototypes and one-off third-party accessories, cards, and do-dads.. I've never ever known them to trade hands for little more than the scrap value or original price at the very very best.

while there are a well established toy collectors market, that's still just as laughable; the condition of the box completely fell far outside of the asking price...

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Keatah and All,

The last "Unopened IIc" was sold on eBay a couple of years back for $2,600.00.

The buyer immediately received and opened it.

This one May or May Not be what the seller say's it is, as the picture showing the tape holding the box closed looks a bit fishy to me. It looks to me that the original wide tape has been cut and a smaller piece of tape used to reseal it.

It is just my opinion, but I think the box has been opened and resealed.
But, like I said, it is just my opinion.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

That's a pretty bold statement...'the last unopened'...not that I'm disputing you, because I simply don't know. But who knows where some old relic like this sits un-noticed on some shelf somewhere.

Lol....if I could justify it, I'd love an unopened IIc. But 6$k plus?.....wow....that would really stress my justification levels.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Check these suckers out...

A IIc monitor stand....brand new unopened
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BRAND-NEW-NOS-UNOPENED-Vintage-Apple-IIc-Monitor-Stand-Model-a2m4028-VERY-RARE-/200944904497?pt=US_Vintage_Computing_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ec93fe931&_uhb=1

IIc Monichrome monitor, unopened
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Vintage-Brand-New-Apple-Monochrome-Monitor-A2M6016-White-Phosphor-IIc-IIc-IIGS-/200944904514?pt=US_Vintage_Computing_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ec93fe942&_uhb=1

IIc external disk drive, new unopened
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BRAND-NEW-NOS-APPLE-iic-Disk-iic-Disk-Drive-Model-A2M4050-RARE-100-Unopened-/200944904453?pt=US_Vintage_Computing_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ec93fe905&_uhb=1

Compared to the $6k listing, this is a steal. And I choked when I saw his prices.

Now, I love the fact they're in the box, and unopened is added bonus, but still, a little beyond my justification level also. Now marry that up with the unopened IIc unit....mmmmmmm....tempting? NOT

I wouls be on it for 2-3k......I'd also be divorced!!!

Re: THIS is Laughable!

the last was referring to the last one that sold, not that there are no more unopened ones. I'm sure there are many in private collections. I know of one for example, but it's not for sale.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

"Man buys unopened Apple IIc on eBay (and opens the box)" Earth shattering news for sure!

I almost prefer purchasing lightly-used and well-cared-for equipment. This way I don't feel guilty about getting oily fingerprints on it, or making microscopic scratch marks. This way I can enjoy the nostalgia to its fullest without distractions.
