Performa with an uncertain future

A performa that needs help finding a new life

It figures

I've gotten the new 36mg ram for my duo. I have a newer larger hdd too. The other two things I need are an os 8 disk and an torx-8 driver. I don't actually have one of those. Doh!

Tinker Ergo Sum

As I work on my iBook, I have the frightening sensation that it could be one of the last projects I work on for awhile. At first, I was content with the idea of winnowing down my collection to the most practical machines. Suddenly, though, an uneasy feeling has settled in. As my older machines find homes (Goodbye Ariel! Goodbye Archimedes! Goodbye Tin Man!), I'm suddenly discovering that it's not making the machines work that's important. As they say, it's not the destination, it's the journey. In short, what started off as a needed skill for work has become a hobby.

the 3400 picturerame applescript

here it is, in all its kludgy, fugly glory:

-- this script runs on startup and can be set to run periodically with something like the iDo Script Scheduler control panel

Well I got my lovely set o' 2 nubus cards that might fit and one did!

After a little bit of head scratching and net surfing -- koolooloompah! We are able to check mail and surf!

I downloaded icab.

So cool!

Next step is to upgrade the OS.

Wish me luck!

Copland help.

I found an install of Copland (Edit: D11E4 and D7E1) sitting on a Hotline server. So far, I've gotten it to boot up, say "Microkernel initialization starting...", then the debugger gives me an Access Fault. :/ Has anyone ever dealt with Copland at all, and would know how to solve this?

I've tried single-stepping past the faulting assembly instructions, and it will tell me that the microkernel initialization is completed, but will not go further.

Apparently, it's because Copland D11E4 will only boot on a 604 or 601, and the 604e is too different.

The Ideal Writer's Computer

What would an ideal writer's computer be? This is an idea that has been addressed many times, no doubt. Or maybe not. at least realistically.

The Painful Process of Culling a Collection

It's been a few days since I made my first post on Applefritter, and that post dealt with the task of deleting some of my computers. I've been in an unusual position of being a rescuer of older systems primarily through reputation; "Hey, don't toss that old computer, give it to Robert! He could probably use it!"

The question is, just how many computers can I use?

Mac Projects - Yellow Dog Linux on PowerMac G4

New York Rocks. Official :)

Still suffering jet lag, but I'd like to give an official thumbs up to the Big Apple (and the Big Apple Apple Store). Popped over to meet up with the guys from Freeverse and do meetings and such.

While I was over there, I got some more feedback from users on a couple of bugs in ToySight Gold. Enough to work out what the problem was and we've got a patched version ready to go. Given our usual speedy website updates (and the need to move the ToySight.com stuff about a bit this week), it might make it this week. Hopefully. Maybe.
