Re: THIS is Laughable!

Hello Zan,
yes sometimes you have luck....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/400789569515?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_sacat%3D0%26_nkw%3D400789569515%26_rdc%3D1

- but in this case even that reply from the guys is indicating a "very close to fraud"
they don´t wan´t to answer, because otherwise you could "nail them to their answer" and make complaint to ebay...

they´re hunting for some stupid guy that bids and afterwards they will drag back to the point:
"we issued what we knew about the item" by making pictures ...
the rest is to the responsibility of the bidder"
the first big joke in the offer: offering chance to test.... but only if you are in USA !
( how to perform the test without powersupply would be the first "route of escape" ....
next reply to be expected after complaint that the entire unit is non working trash :
"you must have used a bad powersupply and that´s your fault !"

....have you seen the transportation fee?

.... and i love that sentence "we love international bidders" followed by the statement
"we don´t grant guarantee to foreign bidders"

the entire offer smells like old rotten fish...

Re: THIS is Laughable!

I hear ya speedy. Sometimes the people seem to just not know and are more than willing to accommodate potential buyers.

Others just want to move stuff out the door as fast as possible, buyer be damned.(or screwed if they can get away with it)

I was very lucky with that last purchase I made. I did not expect to find what I did and would have been perfectly happy with everything as listed. I typically set my bidding software to whatever I am willing to spend and I either win or I don't...... With a few exceptions when it is something I just plain want and have the $$ to buy it. Then I may sit on the auction and go a bit higher just because.

I cannot often do that but once in awhile I find something from my childhood I do not currently have and will spend a few bucks to get it and keep it. As I've said before the rest I move out (after playing with whatever it may be of course for my own satisfaction!) so I can continue the process.

Back to the thread:

Don't forget everyone, only 22hours left to get your $13,000.00 USED Macintosh IIci!!!!!

I knew WizPlus wasn't the most common thing to see on eBay, but I never knew it was worth $900!!!

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Zan, Speedy, and All,

Yup.
Looked at all of the above mentioned auctions.
Took one look at the II Plus with the supposed "Vulcan"
and nearly laughed my ass off.
The Mac IIci...I wrote to the seller and asked if it were made of Platinum.
The WizPlus for $899.00 I bought last year (in the same condition) for $65.00.

Don't worry. Christmas is coming.
It will only get worse.

Here's a new one...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/201192972039
This card looks like a remake of an SCRG QuickLoader card with a few minor changes.
The assembler utilities mentioned sound similar to what you get with Lisa or others.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Macnoyd,

Well...How do I say this?

The seller of this particular item is a very well known person
in his own right, and also a "Fellow Fritter Critter".

I have bought several of his items in the past month, and I am sure
that he would not place a high price on an item if it were not legit and/or worth the price.

He has also listed a "Best Offer" Tag, so I leave it to you
to determine whether or not this item belongs here.

"Nuff Said.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Stephen,

Nothing in my above post indicates this "not" to be legit. Nor does it imply disrespect.
I own several SCRG QuickLoader cards, and my comment is simply an observation regarding the
configuration and layout of the card in the auction. There is no indication of deception.
While I respect everyone who posts and shares on this forum, I've not become familiar with
which AF members represent which sellers on eBay. Should "Fellow Fritter Critters" be
omitted from posting high priced auction findings in this section?

That said, unless the "THIS is Laughable" section of AF is taken disrespectfully, it
might be in ALL AF members best interest to not post here. I certainly haven't displayed
disrespect in any of my posts, as I'd like to think I've matured beyond that. But if this
is the case, we should all reconsider.

Folks have expressed many times over that an item on eBay is worth whatever someone can get
for it. I fully agree with this. But to me, $750 for a simple ROM board with an assembler/
disassembler program on it and instruction booklet is laughable. Hence my post. If this offends
you, I apologize. In all regard, I wish the seller the best of luck with his auction.

You are absolutely right.
My apologies.
I overstepped my bounds and I shouldn't have.

This entire blog was my idea in the first place.
I should know better.

You know, it really annoys me when people claim an item is in "mint condition" and then add caveats like "normal wear and tear", "some small scratches", and "has my old company name engraved on it."

"Mint Condition" means "indistinguishable from new", dammit. As in "fresh from the mint"?

the pitty is, that this chip is used at nearly every second SCSI Interfacecard ( like Apple SCSI and Apple SCSI II )

Then good thing there are other listings, like this one for $5. The only bummer is shipping is almost the same cost of the chip ($4.00).

I would think most people would look at other listing before posting something for 10x the price.

And what is the temperature? Tell us more about temperature and termination ;)? We could learn something. I thought mainly it depends on the ambient temperature, but who knows. Maybe the datasheet knows Wink Have you read it? RTFM and then post rumors here that 5380 burns easily because 5380 (and 53C80, too) has a VERY fool-proof design, this is not an NVIDIA GPU!

BillO, MarkO, and All,

It's way past the IIe's that are being listed on eBay.
The Sellers of IIc and IIgs units have gotten in on the act too.
Don't forget...it's only about 55 shopping days 'till Christmas.

I may have mentioned it before, but I also collect and build 1/35th Scale Models.
(More collecting than building lately, lol)
The listings for models that usually sit between $15.00 and $25.00 has
increased dramatically in the past couple of weeks.

Welcome to the holidays once more

georgel:
"And what is the temperature? Tell us more about temperature and termination?

RTFM and then post rumors here that 5380 burns easily because 5380 (and 53C80, too)

yes i have noticed the new "puppy" in town barking at the fence...
i will explain this "term" in end of this thread ... O.K.?

First of all - you are advised to read carefully and if you perform citation -
the least thing a poster will demand - is that you use correct citation!
As far as anybody can read in my posting above, you will NOT BE ABLE TO SHOW ANYWHERE,
that the text contains:"then post rumors here that 5380 burns easily" !

next to your text:
"...because 5380 (and 53C80, too) has a VERY fool-proof design, this is not an NVIDIA GPU!"

Lets first state several clear points:
the 53C80 was introduced rater late to market in the mid 80`s
therefor IT WAS NOT USED AT THE ORIGINAL APPLE SCSI CONTROLLER
neither at other SCSI Controllers before 1984.....
and first time at Apple the 53C80 has been used in the Apple Highspeed SCSI Controller.....
Lets state next clear point:
there is a difference between what you might call a "fool-proof" design at the chip itself and
things that happen when the chip interacts in "a community of chips" on the interfacecard....
latest at that point the "fool-proof" design of the chip is dependent to a good design of the
interface card....
and not all designs of the cards using the 5380 have really been good and
"fool-proof".....

next point your "question":
"Maybe the datasheet knows Have you read it?"
again my reply:
"seems you believe your argueing with a newbie.... a can asure you are NOT !"
In fact you are argueing with a person that has a completed education at university completed with a degree as
engineer of microprocessor design
.... and of course i have read several times the datasheets...
my question back: "which have you read ? There are several out there: the oldest on from NCR,
the later one from Western Digital or those availiable nowadays from Zilog..... ??? "

next lesson to learn is:
"If you can´t Google it - is NO PROOF that it DOES NOT EXIST!"

Just a simple example:
If i state that in former days in my backyard was a large Oaktree you surely
won´t be able to "google" that - but it is NOT PROOF that that oaktree hasn´t been there!
and therefor i add by myself:
"NEITHER is missing own experience PROOF something DOES NOT EXIST!"

Its rather more a fact if you restrict your knowledge to Google - you relay you credibility on very weak sandy ground !
Google´s information is "rather good" related to stuff released or published after 1995
when internet was expanding..... BUT:
If talking about stuff before 1995 Google will unleash it´s weakness....
any sources related to stuff before 1995 Google is reliable to sources that have been published AFTER 1995
( except the bunch scanned by the Google project in public libraries ) and that´s less than
5% of knowledge existing before 1995 !

I have been in the years from 1980 till 1986 local groupleading person in one of the largest
German local Apple User groups ( AUGE ) in Munich with nearly 450 members in that days !
I have been repairing several hundreds of times Apple computers and peripherials
( how much real own experience do YOU have ??? )

So back to this topic:
In fact in our local user group about 40 to 50 members have been using SCSI cards from various manufacturers...
i have at least seen among that interfacecards 3 Apple SCSI controllers that have been damaged with a "fried" 5380 chip.
In 2 cases i had the chance to measure the temperature of more that 90 degrees celsius
which is far above the permitted temperature of 70 degrees celsius which is published in the datasheet !

So again back to stuff you can´t "google": In former days several of the SCSI drives had internal temination option
leading to resistor network wirh 150 Ohms instead of the recommended 220/330 Ohm resistors recommended
by NCR in the data sheet.... this caused more current to be dragged of from the chip than permitted
by the datasheet ( you remember that i mentioned above the difference between fool-proof
in chip design and interface design
??? and surely YOU SHOULD ALSO MENTION CORRECT MY REPLY:
"temperature depends to the amount of devices in the chain and kind of termination..." !!!

In the one case the trouble was caused by a Micropolis 1375 Harddisk and it´s internal termination....
after replacing the 5380 chip at the Apple SCSI card and then changing the placing of the harddisks
in the SCSI daisy chain the Micropolis harddrive was later located in front of the Seagate ST277N-0
and disabling the internal termination of the Micropolis harddisk and instead inserting 330 Ohm termination plugs
to the Seagate drive solved the problem.

In the second case the reason for malfunction and "frying" of the 5380 was caused by 2 of the 4 harddrives in the
chain both with enabled termination and one of them again supplied with 150 ohm temination blocks
( if i remember correct it was a Rodime RO3085S )...

- so in fact because it was not a "single event" it seems that that what you call
"a "fool-proof" design of the chip" is not that "fool-proof" as you claim.....
it seems rather more, that in case of wrong termination you CAN FRY the 5380 chip with
no "fool-proof" protection
! In other words: I would only call the chip to be "fool-proof"
if the chip would have some kind of "output current limitation".... but that seems not to be inside the chip
- at least i have not seen such in the datasheets i have.....
do you have any datasheet claiming something other than that ???
And please MARK UP - WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE 5380 and ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT THE 53C80 !
( remember the topic was initiated by the ebay offer of the 5380 and not the 53C80 ??? see posting # 1171 !

this reminds me to your posting at:

http://www.applefritter.com/content/what-apple-iie-clone

georgel:
"I am unique but this clone is definitely not"

so to that i can reply:
"i confess - YOU ARE UNIQUE - but your aggresive attitude isn´t unique at all....

it´s like a small puppy-dog running to each fence barking at the big dogs behind the fence and
stupidly believing he won the fights because the big dogs didn´t bite him....
- but my dear "puppy" - be prepared in some cases big dogs DO BITE BACK !"

but never the less, sometimes i also react with rather "hard attitude"...
BUT THERE IS A DIFFERENCE:
my hard attitude raises, when some questions are repeated several times again allthough they have been answered several times and seemingly the newbie just is too lazy to search former threads and therefor wasting time and efforts...
but i would be very careful before claiming somebody "RTFM and then post rumors here ( that 5380 burns easily )..."

sincerely

Speedy, while my masters degree is not exactly in microprocessor systems field of engineering I happen to make these for fun http://www.ebay.com/itm/251697309611

Looking at your underlined wordy postings here I guess you are better in writing phony but well underlined nothing saying texts than real and effective computer code and this amuses me. If you apply mains voltage to the SCSI bus you will most likely fry any 5380. Empirically gained knowledge like yours with termination resistance is usually not very reliable since there might be many other factors that you missed to understand. Actually even if scsi bus pins are connected to 5V or GND or connected via improper termination impedance the 5380 survives.

I have read the Ebay listing. Did you write the description? I ask because it says: "RAMFAST cards are not fully SCSI compliant." This makes sense, since I heard long ago that one certain SCSI hard drive in a Tulin case that I had was not compatible with the Ramfast. As I recall, I had to use the Apple II SCSI card (not high speed).

Well, I did some searching with Google and I can't find anything that would suggest that you are wrong about this specific attribute concerning the SCSI controller card having to assign itself a SCSI ID on the bus. I can't say that I understand the SCSI specification, but the statement from this website seems to corroborate your description on Ebay: http://www.tandbergdata.com/knowledge-base/index.cfm/scsi-bus-configuration-tips/ "Make sure that all devices are at unique SCSI IDs. The Host Bus Adaptor and any peripherals attached to the SCSI bus must all be set to unique SCSI IDs. (The terminator does not use a SCSI ID.)"

About your listing: You said that you "build these cards for fun." I am really wondering now... Since the description for that card says, "SCSI REV C Card Clone." Did you copy the design from the Apple II SCSI card Rev C then write up the traces from that card using special software like Ben Heck does and then send the files out to get the boards made and then hand solder the components onto the boards? I am not saying that it is a 100% clone. It can't be because it supplies termination power. The Apple II SCSI card does not do that.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Many SCSI host adapters that I have come across over the years do not get assigned an ID via jumpers or switches. Many rely on drivers or other software running on the host or from the adapters own BIOS/ROM to set the ID based on running a bus discovery. The RAMFast manual does indeed state that the card's utility program displays a "Searching the SCSI Bus" message on first run.

There is no "compliance" section in the manual that tells me whether or not the card uses a unique ID, however, since the standard has always allowed for multiple initiators on a bus all communication must be directed to a particular device ID, including target responses. Not using an unique ID would be a serious breach of the standard and I doubt very much if such an adapter would work at all.

georgel, how did you determine this, because it doesn't have a jumper block for the purpose?

Steven, been watching that since it was listed. I almost bid on it as I'd like another Apple II in the mid range that I may keep for myself. Have a real high serial and a fairly low but nothing in between.

Once it broke the $250ish mark it was out of my range. Lord knows I don't need another Apple IIe as well but hey, something always needs some parts!

Hello Steven,
seems you didn´t view the pictures carefully.... otherwise if you would have
carefully inspected the 7th picture - you would have recognized
in the Apple II that famous 4k/16k Blocks indicating a very early mainboard revision...
the guy that picked the offer seems to have examined the pictures more carefully...
i´m quite sure he is happy with that deal !
the rest is just an "addon" gimmick to the mainboard....

Speedy,

Yup. I saw the 4k/16k Blocks when I looked at the unit pictures.
I even bid on it a couple of times.
I was trying to justify my purchase of another Apple II
when it got away from me.

Stand on a street corner long enough and another bus comes along.

SERIOUSLY???

Steven :)

Hey Steven, check it out:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-2-e-desktop-computer-/281486429071?pt=US_Vintage_Computers_Mainframes&hash=item4189e60b8f

Then look at this platinum:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Apple-2e-Computer-2-Disk-Drives-Lot-of-265-Floppy-Disks-/231382168879?pt=US_Vintage_Computers_Mainframes&hash=item35df73b52f

Great prices huh?

Too bad that first //e costs so damn much. It appears to have a CAT modem & an expansion pack. I've been looking for an expansion pack for years to no avail. Who knows, maybe he will take my $100 offer?

Re: THIS is Laughable!

I was watching that one. If you scrolled through the photos the original boxes are included as well, which is the only reason I can guess it went so high. Granted it's coming into the silly season again but this seemed even high for this time of year. IIc+ have been going for $200-$350 depending on condition even during the off time of year but I can only guess it was the condition and all the original boxes (for CPU, Monitor stand and Monitor) that drove it up so high.

Then again maybe someone had too much $$ burning a hole in their pocket!

Re: THIS is Laughable!

I don't know, I had a hell of a time finding a decent //c plus a couple years ago. They'd pop up on ebay but were in horrible condition. I think I finally paid about half that price but it still needed restoration.

Jay,

There are several up there right now, but they want your arm, leg, and first born child.

---In other news--

I have just seen my first $1000.00 Apple IIe!

That's right, an Apple IIe.
It must be 45 Shopping Days until Christmas.
Get yours now before they're gone!

LOL

Re: THIS is Laughable!

No doubt, Steven, that must be a platinum //e. I mean actual platinum.

I could see paying a unusual sum for things I can't find. I'm sure I'm not alone, you start to get weird. Not desperate, just weird. I've been trying to get my hands on a jplus for ten years.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Hello Steven,
it´s just the moment to recall posting #1092 from little more than 2 months back....
In horse races the commenteer would now anounce:
"we´re looking for the heading bunch approaching the last bow of the racing track....
cute who´ll make it ahead in the final straight path heading in the next 6 weeks
to the final goalline...... and yes it´s "snoopydog" ! Will he make it against
the "busting rocketeer" or not ?
let´s wait for our final candidates till they raise up their heads in the next 6 weeks....
and the winner is?

He's going to get $1000.00 like I am going to get $100.00 for a candy bar.
